61-64 SG Junior Caps?

My research is giving conflicting results...

What kind of capacitor can I expect to find in a stock 61-64 SG Junior? Cermaic? PIO? Other?

Greg will know for sure.

My '64 ES330 has .022 Black Beauties in it, that was factory stock for those at least. I'd guess they used the same on a Junior, but I can't say for sure.

Re: 61-64 SG Junior Caps?

Typically, the Juniors(being "budget" guitars) got the ceramic .022mfd cap, while the fancier guitars got the Black Beauty caps. BUT, with everything Gibson, your mileage may vary.

That is kind of interesting to hear your 61' had the .047's in it. Does it have the P-90's or Humbuckers?
After trying 3-4 sets of .022 PIO caps in my 04' Faded SG (490R/490T) I installed a pair of the .047 Russian PIO and converted it over to 50's wiring and she sounds sweet. Volume and Tone taper off nicely even with the stock Gibson pots.

With the .022's and modern wring it was just a little to bright/harsh and when I rolled off the Tone it would get to bassy sounding. Now it sounds a lot thicker and chunkier than before, but still has that Classic SG Tone.

Jonesy, I can't find a picture right now, but I have seen about 7 or 8 '61-'63's with the same .047's.
The pups are PAF's x 3...and sound very creamy. I like the .047's with this guitar. I think the neck pickup is exceptional.
I've had her since '72 and everything appears to be original (except the '50s TRC)...the pots are dated '61 and solder joints look untouched.
She is just under 7 lbs on the bathroom scale, but more like 9.5 on the Richter scale.

Re: 61-64 SG Junior Caps?

My one owner '61 SG Les Paul Standard has .022 ceramics. I know they are original, and the sound is very good with them.

Don't believe I've seen an early 60's sg-style guitar with anything other than ceramics in it...
