Re: Gibson SG, better then the Gibson les paul ???
I think that the two guitars have a different application really. How can they really be judged against one another?

Re: Gibson SG, better then the Gibson les paul ???
I agree with Nugget. Each guitar has its own merit. However, the SG has always been my favorite guitar, since it's so light and comfortable. And,
it has such great access to the upper frets. If I could only own ONE guitar, it would be an SG. I have two now: A naturalburst SG Standard ![]() and a brown faded SG Special:

Re: Gibson SG, better then the Gibson les paul ???
Well, Nugget, I like them both, but the Standard is my fave!
I got the faded to save wear and tear on the Standard, to preserve it. And, since the faded is pretty inexpensive, I don't have to be as careful with it! You can get the faded at GC for $579 these days

Re: Gibson SG, better then the Gibson les paul ???
They both look like great SGs. I was curious to know if they compare tonally.

Re: Gibson SG, better then the Gibson les paul ???
I love my SG, but its got nothing on my Paul *for me anyway*.
I find it to be a little neck heavy, and it will fall if I let it go with my left hand. The strap button placement is terrible, and if you move it to the upper horn, the little bit of leather hanging down gets in the way of my wrist while playing the upper frets, so I have been unable to find a decent strap location on this guitar... especially for my custom made straps. Upsetting! The guitar SMOKES in the tone department... but didn't always do so. The stock pickups in the Gothic SG were overwound garbage, and as soon as I replaced the plastic nut with a brass one and threw in some great pickups, this guitar became my favorite studio axe. But because of the balance, and the strap button placement, I don't use it live at all. ![]() Just my 2cents. I've always loved SG's but I need a balanced guitar, and can't have anything in the way of my hands while playing! |

Re: Gibson SG, better then the Gibson les paul ???
I went with a SH-5 in the bridge, so its got that vintage tone, but roll the volume up to full and it'll do the heavier, downtuned stuff and remain clear and powerful.
With the neck pickup, I tried a Jazz, but to be honest... I find the Jazz to be sterile... so I put a Seth in for a long time, until I had another guitar that needed it more... so now its just a 59 in the neck. But the 2 together work really well! I'm a huge fan of both pickups on *middle position on the toggle*.

Re: Gibson SG, better then the Gibson les paul ???
Loki, I suppose it's a matter of personal taste and what you're used to.
My Gibson SG's have always been pretty balanced, and haven't been top-heavy. I did, however, have an Epi SG and that definitely was top-heavy. In fact, every Epi SG I've ever tried had the same problem, but not the Gibsons. That strap button never seemed to bother me, but that's just me. As far as tonality of the faded vs. the Standard....I can't really make that comparison, because the bridge pickup in the faded is different than the Standard. The Standard has a 490R in the neck and a 498T in the bridge. The Faded has a 490R in the neck and a 490T in the bridge, so it's hard to compare them. However, the way it is now, the Standard has better tone hands down. Much warmer, and more balls. Think Angus Young! The Faded still has some punch, but it's noticably less powerful. However, it's great for blues where you don't want a lot of distortion. I like the way it sounds, and I like having the variety.

Re: Gibson SG, better then the Gibson les paul ???
Variety is the spice of life! Actually this Gibson Gothic is the first SG I've ever owned that wasn't balanced. It is very neck heavy.
I just have a hard time with the strap button... it doesn't bother me too much, unless I brush my thumb on it or something during a solo, and then I'm instantly soured... and refuse to use it live for a couple weeks... haha I just wish I could find a solution that worked for me... its one of my best sounding guitars! |

Re: Gibson SG, better then the Gibson les paul ???
Well, I don't know what the solution would be. I've seen SG's where the
strap button was moved to the top horn tip. Depending on the thickness of the guitar strap, I've had to trim the strap so it doesn't get in the way!

Re: Gibson SG, better then the Gibson les paul ???
They never offer what I want in an sg, gibson or epi, classic white finish, ebony board, small pick guard, p-90sk, traps, and a vibratone would rock, but a stop tail would do. Cherry and ebony bore me, and I dont mean to offend anyone, but bursts on a sg just dont work for me, the body style does best with opaque finishes, oddly enough I find pastels rather eye catching on them.

Thank, Terence! However, I put GOLD top hat knobs on it since that pic was taken, and it looks even better with them on it! Gives it a real vintage look!

Re: Gibson SG, better then the Gibson les paul ???
I always prefer Pauls. The other guy in my band plays an Epiphone SG, so I play it some, but his has the bulky 50's neck that offsets it, and I'm sure the second he drops it, the neck will snap right off. Pauls are just so much more solid to me.

Re: Gibson SG, better then the Gibson les paul ???
Very different. The SG is brighter and more "in your face" if you ask me. The LP has more of a singing tone in my experience. I did recently have a late '60's that had some wonderful tone though...amazing neck pickup. I foolishly traded it for an amp..and then that amp for another, and then traded back and got another amp!! LOL. I like amps, and I ended up with an amp that may be perfect for me..but I traded the SG out of boredom..which I have a tendency to do. I also had a new faded that screamed bloody murder. Traded that too! LOL.

Re: Gibson SG, better then the Gibson les paul ???
I used to gig with both an LP (79 LP Custom Silverburst) and my Standard.
I used the LP mostly for slide because of the sustain...but the LP is just too dense for me. I do like that "in your face" sound...the kind that Angus gets from his axes. The LP does "sing" more, but you can make the SG sing, too if you EQ your amp right. I really do like the gold knobs on the faded...more "vintage" look! I think that you need to embrace the differences of each guitar. They're all different...like your kids! Or...like food!

Re: Gibson SG, better then the Gibson les paul ???
are apples better than pears, are grapes better than cherries?
Man They are different pieces of wood all together, Like the old debate Strats or Les Pauls? You have your die hard supporters of both, all boils down to what you are trying to reach with your guitar and tones I think to try and compare them side by side is an injustice to each guitar
