Vintage SG weight

Anyone know the average weight of an early '60's SG Standard or Special?

Re: Vintage SG weight

From the 3 mid to late 60's SG's I've owned in recent times they've averaged 7.5 to just under 8 pounds. Now earlier ones may be a bit lighter. They say the wood from 50's to earlier 60's were not as dense I believe as later wood but I don't think it would be that drastic.

Also add in that Standards have that heavier side arm trem on it and metal cased humbuckers and specials could have come without trems so that can be a factor.

Others will chime in I'm sure.

Re: Vintage SG weight

They're still pretty much all over the place, but no super heavy (not all the ones I have tried, owned etc.) like some of the later ones did, such as, the early 1970s ones (1971-1972). The vibrola still adds some hefty weight to them, especially the sideways, but they will never be too heavy.

Re: Vintage SG weight

My '61 says 7 lbs. even on the bathroom scale. Feels like it's probably just under.

Re: Vintage SG weight

My own '62 Special (no bigsby) comes in at approximately 5 lbs, 10 oz. Polaris White finish must have added a couple of ounces.
