Pawn Stars 1961 Gibson Les Paul SG

Pawn Stars next week is going to have a 1961 Gibson Les Paul SG come in the store (that according to the commercial) the expert said will be a six figure guitar. It's on Monday night at 10:30 PM, I believe and this is a pic of the guitar.

Daaaaaaang that thing is clean... I can only see it going into 6 figures if it is literally brand new, unplayed, original tags, professionally auctioned, etc. OR if it has some serious history behind it

Re: Pawn Stars 1961 Gibson Les Paul SG

Wouldn't matter if it was absolutely dead mint, never played museum piece quality. An SG is not a 6 figure guitar. Low 5 fives yes, but 6.... not unless it has some major provinence (Claptons Cream SG, Harrison's Revolver sessions SG etc.)

IF that is the specific guitar its clearly been refreted, covers removed from the pickups and has a break at the input jack. not a very clean example IMO. If the suposed "expert" thinks thats a 6 figure guitar he's not much of an expert

Re: Pawn Stars 1961 Gibson Les Paul SG

Expert what expert? That guitar is worth around $15000 to $18000 max
the body has the common issue of cracks through to the control cavity around the output jack, been refreted, pickup covers removed and if there are more issues then it could be worth less

Re: Pawn Stars 1961 Gibson Les Paul SG

And the white is a little too white I think. Gibson white because of the nitro clear coat they used will always turn some sort of cream to light yellow.. It's very white it looks like from the pic, in the binding especially.

Also you see these priced at 12K to 25K everyday on ebay for instance but you rarely see one actually sell in that range. You'd see a mid 60's SG Custom sell for around 6K a lot more than these high dollar ones.

Can't wait to watch the show though!

Re: Pawn Stars 1961 Gibson Les Paul SG

It probably has Seymour Duncan pickups, and not PAFs. The appraiser will probably give the owner at least one bad piece of news. I can hear this famous letdown speech, "Ya know, on the one hand, if this were a 100% vintage guitar, it would be worth, say $30K, but I am afraid that, on the other hand, because of ..., it is only worth ...". Great theatrics, nevertheless.

Taken from the PS web site

Get strung along with the Pawn Stars as a 1961 Les Paul SG guitar jams into the shop. Owned by a member of Les Paul's family, will the guys be able to fine-tune their offer, or will the deal de-tune?

I had a white double neck that sat in it's case for five years, and turned cream colored. A 50 year old guitar will not be that white.
I think it's a newer conversion.
I can't wait to find out for shre though.

Speaking of Les Paul's family, does anyone know what happened to Les Paul's guitars when he died or if his family has them? The Chasing Sound documentary made it look like he had tons of amazing guitars in his house...

I stopped by there last week while I was in Vegas. Major disappoint. It is a glorified gift shop. If you want a Chumlee T-shirt, that is the right place.

Did they have any cool guitars for sale or just a bunch of regular pawn shop junk? Also does the body seem a little thick to be a 61 SG on the preview. I only got a quick glimps of it on the preview.

Re: Pawn Stars 1961 Gibson Les Paul SG

I sold a very clean (except for a jack crack) one for 10,500 to VGC - ended up on a Heritage Auction and sold for 3K less. The &*%*&%*& that bought it parted it out...

There are a few clean ones for sale for 9999 to 17,999.
Guess what, they haven't moved in over a year..it's a tough market.

This is what a unmolested 61 LP looks like including untouched PAFs

There were @ 300 guitars - They were in the same bedroom until last month. The are being auctioned off in the near future by the estate with the proceeds to go to the Les Paul Foundation - Welcome to the Official Les Paul Foundation Website

The above example is SWEET !
And I have to agree, the market has gotten so soft I remember a few yrs ago they were getting any where from $19k to $22k for a unmolested piece.
Not they are lucky to $12k to $15k for one.

I have met Les Paul's daughter before.. Her name is Colleen Wess. She is married to high level manager at the company I work for. Not that she is the relative, I just remembered that I had met her a few years ago when they were at our plant for tour.

Didn't Les Paul hate the SG body style and ask Gibson to take his name off it?

I think if a relative of Les Paul was selling a guitar, he/she would get more in a private sale than at a pawn shop.
