My Old 70 Standard

Hi Guys,
New to the forum and this section, I wanted to share my SG I just dug out of the closet where it has been for the past four years!!!!

I bought this in about 77 at a local pawnshop for $250.00,
I was 15, cut a lot of yard for this one that summer!!
She looked brand new when I got her, Unfortunately, I was young and dumb,
and she has been through the mill, got some stories to tell though!!

Anyway, going to get her back into playing shape, do a few cosmetic things to her and rock out!!!!

I'll post pics as I go

Obligitory headstock break, Dog knocked it down the stairs......
Repaired with epoxy Didn't know better at the time,
Holds a tune great though!!

Standard neck break by Gunn E. Slinger, on Flickr

As you can see by the checking, she is quite relicked these days, by my hands after what???....35 years of playing and molesting her!!, and people pay extra for that!!

SUPER COOL !! There is nothing like a guitar you have had for that long ! I have a Fender Tele De Luxe I bought in 1980 with a similar story.
Rock on !

Re: My Old 70 Standard

Been scrubbing away, this thing was FILTHY!!!
I was having trouble getting the finish clean, kept leaving streaks, haze, residue, blech!!, lot's of years of built up residue from god knows what I put on it..

I wish my night photography skill's were better, (Been reading), after I took it apart, I have a T-Top in the neck, Original. (thought i had the other but, nope, out of a 80's V is where the other covered pickup i have came from). and a early 80's Duncan custom.

S:g semi stripped by Gunn E. Slinger, on Flickr

It is faded pretty good, actually looks like muddy coffee when it's outside, not bad indoors though,

I do have the original tulip heads, going to order up some of the replacement bushings for those and reinstall them, I love the way they look on a S/G!!

More scrubbing and parts bin rummaging tomorrow.

Horn carve shot for Solo..;-0,

Not at all worried about breaks, the old girl did plenty of battle after they happened, no issues, joined your site, good stuff!!

Anyway, cleaned up the chrome and tuners, blew out the tuners with compressed air, then oiled with 3-in1, they feel good now, Oh yeah, tools of the trade for cleaning and making them shiny, Windex and a old toothbrush

Pretty Tulips!!!!

Tulips by Gunn E. Slinger, on Flickr

I was having issues with getting the finish clean, tried Naptha, windex, all the usual, went out and bought some Virtuoso cleaner and polish, the cleaner really cut through the crud, wasn't easy, it kept trying to dry, had to do about 5 inches at a time, then repeat, after the polish it looks and feels great, I wasn't sure she would look good again, Now my ugly duckling is turning into a swan!!!

Here she is hanging out with a few other oldies!!.

Re: My Old 70 Standard

Nice to see another SG escape the closet. She's a looker.
My Custom has the requisite neck break too...(Gibson Smile).
I've had mine since '72 and can't seem to part with her.
I'm sure she sounds just wonderful.

Re: My Old 70 Standard

if that custom in your avatar is her, she is a sweetie!!!
I've always lusted for a custom, in this economy that's is not happening anytime soon!!!!

Anyway, just ordered bushings to put the tulip klusons back on, and a set of
reflectors for her also, never was crazy about witch hats.

Solo Dallas has really done his homework on these and I never looked at this thing in so much detail since I've had it. The carves, neck heel, the way the ends of the headstock lip up, all kinds of detail.

The Best part is the memories of a lot if good times and old friends that I get while polishing and detailing, sometimes I just smile and laugh while I'm doing it!!

More pics tomorrow!

Re: My Old 70 Standard

Well,
Put all the plastics back on, cleaned the wax out of the pick-guard holes.
cleaned up the pots, I was checking out the date codes on the pots, 137711,
This would be November of 1967 correct??, would this be out of line for what is supposed to be a 1970 year S/G ??

Waiting on parts.........

Re: My Old 70 Standard

Well my parts have showed up, but a bit of a problem, when the headstock was drilled for grovers, they did not drill all the way through the headstock, just far enough for the grovers to slide in the back, I guess i need the original bushings, (Of course they are long gone), I was wondering which ones to get??

Any help would be appreciated.

I find pigtail products to be of the best quality along side retro-spec here are links to both their sites. Retro-spec seem to not have bushing listed on their site, you may want to email them to see if you can get bushings from them. I don't know if you would need a different style of bushings for that 1970 SG, others may have more information on hand. Personally I would keep the grovers, but I hope it all works out for you in the end and you end up with a guitar you want and enjoy playing.

Re: My Old 70 Standard

Thanks for the heads up, I just ordered a set of original size bushings from WD, so, we will see, I have a thing for seeing those tulip tips, Just makes it scream "Play Me!!" when I see those, Since I had the originals I thought I would see if I could get them back on, after oiling and cleaning they are pretty smooth, The Grovers are Really sloppy, the Klusons where only about 10 years old when they came off, so, We shall see!!

Trust me, I Do!!!, my dad helped me finish paying for it, found the reciept on my dresser and asked what i was doing with a pawn ticket, when I told him i had a guitar on layaway he just laughed, after watching me sweat my arse off for a few summer months to pay for it, he took me downtown on a pretext and paid the last $75.00, I just sent him a pic and told him what I am doing to it, He thinks it's great that I still have her.

Re: My Old 70 Standard

I put the bushings in last night, Strung her up and did a quick setup,
Have some minor issues, some fret buzz,(they have never even been dressed), Volume pots drop to nothing under 7, even after I cleaned them with cleaner, But.....Other then those few items, I had a few hours last night and tonight getting reunited with my old friend!!!!,

">

Here she is with the same rig I ran her through years ago!!!
just like old times, even have the same O.D pedal!!!
I think I really need to treat her to a pro setup though.

Looks like those pots were made in 1971.. You are missing a digit in the code.. It should have 7 digits.. 137 means CTS pots.. Next 2 digits 71 is the year and the last 2 are the sequential week of the year.. I can't see in the picture but it looks like 71 and the last digit is under the solder.. Your SG might be a 71' ... Yep, Mu-tron's, Phaser and octave divider,
That is the worlds nastiest sounding octave divider!!!
Perfect for Accept, It's what wolf hoffman used,
