1964 SG Special value- Advise needed

I have a opportunity to buy a vintage 64 SG Special with OHSC and case candy. The condition is near mint with an exception of a belt rash spot about the size of a quarter on the back. The color is cherry and it has P-90's. The guitar has the best classic rock/rock n roll sound I have ever heard in a Gibson guitar before ( I have owned many Les Paul's and SG's and 335's) I am not sure where to start my offer at. The seller wants me to " make him an offer." I know the vintage market is not the strongest right now. What would some of you pay for this guitar? Or what do you think it is worth?

Any input would be appreciated greatly or just steer me in the right direction. I haven't found a nice one like this before. Especially with the original receipt and tags... Thanks in advance!

The guitar has been inspected and is 100% original... Here's a few pics.

That thing has been for sale for along time. Average Specials have been going for +-3K, but this one just may be worth more...4K?

I know he wants around $7k. He said he paid $10k for it, and has the receipt to prove it. Is there a vintage price guide like Fender has? How do you know it has been for sale along time? It is in my hometown of Detroit. Is this really the same guitar you have seen before?

Here's a white one for $7500.

Can you post a link to it? To the one that has been for sale a long time?

That guitar is a great example of the stupidity that took place in '05/'06. I don't doubt he payed a lot for it, but its just not a 7K dollar guitar.

I've seen a 65 special for £2000 I think. They are fantastic guitars. P90s are tge best pickups!

When did he buy it? So contrary to the auction, its at least a 2 owner?

It is an extremely cool guitar, everything you could want.

I agree 100%! They are just warm enough and bright enough. With a little gain, they sound awesome. Too bad he want's way too much for it.

Re: 1964 SG Special value- Advise needed

I love my '62, but given the choice I would rather have a '64. They consistently have "better" necks, IMO, than the earlier ones. I do like the earlier P-90's though

I believe he bought it 5 or 6 years ago now that I think about it. The vintage market could not have changed that much I wouldn't think. I guess he over-payed and is trying to get top dollar now. I'm sure he won't take my bid of $4550. But if he does, that bad boy is mine. I have played it through a Twin Reverb and a TSL 100 and it sounds incredible. The aged wood....there's nothing like it.The guy only played chords and the frets are perfect and almost new looking. It is in very nice condition.

Re: 1964 SG Special value- Advise needed

There are plenty of people stuck with 10k LP Juniors, 20K TV's, 20K SG Standards, 50K wraptail goldtops...

It was pretty much overnight( only a matter of months) from the peak of the '06 craze to the end of '07 where everything crashed.

Things have changed from '08, and drastically from '06. Stuff is at least selling now, compared to '08. People just need the balls to dump some of this stuff. I'm not convinced that we've hit bottom yet, or that prices will ever go up again.

Re: 1964 SG Special value- Advise needed

Then you have to question why you want THIS guitar? Is it the sound/playability? The condition? Both valid reasons, but there is obviously a premium for the condition. for $4500, *I* would go after a clean, non vibrola, slanted tailpiece '61/early '62. But, that '64 is soooo clean, its scary!

What's the most you would pay for this guitar if you really wanted it? Since I have played it, it was like a tease. I want the guitar bad now, but after this conversation, I will not pay anywhere near $7k! I will post if I get it and for how much...

The feel is incredible. The slim taper neck is fast as hell. The tone is amazing. Especially if you like playing classic rock and blues. The finish is a real nice shade of cherry in person. The pictures do not do it any justice. The only thing I would want is a little more grain, but I can live without that. That guitar is so playable, it's like nothing I have ever owned. The neck was made for my hands. That's why I want it.

Re: 1964 SG Special value- Advise needed

I know some people will say 4500 is too much, but I don't think its crazy, especially since you've played it. You cant second guess a guitar that speaks to you, because if you pass, you will always think about it, unless you come across one that blows it away. If you buying to sit on, as an investment... I wouldn't recommend that. Ask the seller how that went for him! If you pay "too much", and enjoy it, the value of that joy can only be measured by you.

Here's the thing, this is a non vibrola version which is more rare than it's counter parts. With the buckle rash on the back, that in itself takes the mint off the deal. 5000-5500 tops. The guitar other than the rash looks superb. Start at 4500.

Actually, the vintage market has taken a nose-dive in the past five or six years. My '62 SG LP (one owner)is now worth less than half of what it was five or six years ago.

A good luthier should have a current value book, but to my experience the values in them are a little high

I'd say anywhere between $4,000 - $5,000 would be fair. I wouldn't go any higher though.

Re: 1964 SG Special value- Advise needed

Thank you all for the input!! If the buckle rash wasn't there, I would say it is mint. But that's irrelevant because he will take $6500 and not a dime under. I'm going to have to let this one go. If anyone knows of any 64 SG Specials without the vibrola, please let me know! I really want one of these in cherry... I have seen a couple Alpine White ones, but something about a cherry SG looks so much better, IMO.
Thanks again!
