1964 Gibson SG for $17,500

http://www.frettedamericana.com/gibs...-d-1122-0.html

Not concerned with the asking price, but Fretted Americana's claim:

This example is from arguably the best year of the "original style" SG Standards and has the great advantage of the far superior Gibson "Deluxe Vibrola" as opposed to the clumsy and cumbersome "side-to-side" vibrola that is found on the earlier Standards. It also has the stronger neck joint that was introduced in early 1963.

Best year is a bold claim. Phil X's tone gets a lot better when he gets to the Tonemaster, so you can skip the opening sequence with just the Vox AC30. Would love to own the guitar, and find the perfect combination of overdrive and amp to dial in the tone just right. Anyway, still dreaming about finding the best 60's SG, and since I don't own a '64, am a little envious of those who actually own one. Of course, the "best" is always subjective, and with tone, you also have to include both the humbucker and P90 examples, which means you have to own an SG with each pickup type.

Man, I 've never seen that one before. I thought I had seen all the FA videos. That SG sounds really sweet.

I really like this one:

That is a beautiful guitar no doubt, although its over priced IMO. It certainly sounds great in Phil's skilled hands, thats for sure.

As to what the best year of SG is, well, thats subjective. There is no right or wrong answer. Personally, I like the sidepull trem. I don't have any tuning issues with it and I just think it looks way cooler than the Lyre. I also don't mind the thinner necks of the 60, 61 and 62.

My personal favorite SG would a 62 with the short Ebony Block tail piece (OK, so I'm a little biased ) or the side pull.

I agree with Kev. Commercial statements are what they are.
This guitar DOES sound amazing, however, many SGs do.

Phil X is my hero... I love all of those videos. Crazy player, crazier guitars.

I played a pretty sweet '62 SG with the ebony block tailpiece earlier this week. They were asking a cool $20K.

Even at those prices it's getting harder and harder to come by "no excuses" early SGs.

Ebony Block models are pretty rare and the asking prices are usually higher on them if they are clean no issues guitars. But still, asking price and selling price are two different things.

Arguably. As in you can argue about it, as in debatable, as in having an opinion.
