1958 gibson les paul custom

Hi, I'm pretty sure I have a 58 les paul custom (it has the alnico v5, but it has a different pickup which replaced the p90). The serial number is worn and hard to read. I believe it reads either LE899121 or LE890122. I have pics, but the files are too large and I have to fix them. I'll try to have the pics up soon. Any help on serial numbers, info on places to buy original parts, or advise on leaving it original vs restoring it would be great.

To get a better answer, you might have to get those pics up. The serial number should start with an 8 xxxx. I'm not sure about the LE.

I thought that the 58 customs had PAF's in it from the beginning. Is it black?

Re: 1958 gibson les paul custom

This is a P-90 equipped 57 custom

This is a '58 Custom

How do you know that it is a '58?

Re: 1958 gibson les paul custom

I was told it was a 58, but I've been looking around it seems like the 56 and 57 have the alnico and the p90, so now I think its most likely not the 58. It has a white paf in the bottom now, but its not original.

Re: 1958 gibson les paul custom

Is it black? The numbers seem like 1 too many or maybe you're just having trouble reading it. If you said the P90 was replaced with a paf, that means that it is most likely a 56 or early 57. But it can also be a '54 or '55. Any other details that you might like to add, feel free.

The white paf is not original to the guitar but is it an original PAF? What do the tuning pegs look like?

Re: 1958 gibson les paul custom

Its black, all gold hardware, grover super rotomatic tuners, headstock says Gibson les paul custom, square pearl fret inlays, split diamond headstock inlay, not sure on the paf, but its old as well. Sorry pics would be so much easier

Re: 1958 gibson les paul custom

What kind of bridge does it have? Is it the same setup as the pictures i posted above? I'm assuming it's a 2 pick up.

An easy way to find out, or easier way I should say is, remove the control backplate and read the code on the pots.

LE? - Limited Edition?
Can you at least reduce the size of the serial number pic & post that?
With that serial I don't know what to think.

Don't forget guys, the '72 - 55 reissues had the staple front pickup.

I'm pretty sure that they didnt use LE back then. It's throwing me off but I'm sure he has an interesting custom that has been rerouted for pafs.

Good point. but, I wonder if the serial number started with LE in those days.

Is it possible you can check the pot codes on it?

This is a pic of a late 50's cavity

Sorry for the sporadic posting but I'm finding new info along the way. Apparently, the grovers came stock with the '58 customs

Didn't some Japanese (Greco, Burny, etc) guitar companies have an LE serial at some point?

Re: 1958 gibson les paul custom

THanks for all the help, I was looking at the 72-54 reissue and the 1955 they seem to have cylinder shaped knobs (as does mine) and the 56 and 57 seem to have the cone shaped speed knobs. It also has a black pick guard if that helps any

Oh, Welcome to the forum!
Try this on the serial (this may or may not work, but a cheap & easy shot)
clean piece of paper, pencil, take side of pencil lead and bub lightly. Y'know, like a tombstone rubbing. Or CSI
Sometimes it helps...

@ronrico19:

From my limited knowledge-base:

(1) if the guitar is from 1958, the serial number will begin with an '8' followed by a space and then four or five digits;

(2) if the guitar has an Alnico V neck pickup, either the pickup is a later addition or the guitar is not a 1958--Gibson stopped making Customs with Alnico V's in mid-1957;

(3) almost all 1950's Customs made after mid-1957 have three pickups.

No problem. And welcome to the forum

You came to the right place to find answers on your guitar. I wish i could be of help but I'm doing what I can with what info you gave. You'll get your answer shortly.

If you have the chance, take some pics and post them. That would greatly improve your chances of finding out what this baby is.

Re: 1958 gibson les paul custom

Thanks for all the help guys! The number on the pots was 1377303 (and the pot cavity was very similar to the above pic). I tried the tombstone trick when I first got it and thought the first number was an 8 then I also saw that thing about if it starts with an 8 followed by 5 numbers its a 58 on a vintage gibson site.

Its has 2 pickups an alnico near the neck and Im pretty sure it was suppost to have a p90 at the tail, but currently there is a white pickup that appears to be a PAF at the tail

Does the capacitor on the neck pickup - in between the neck pickup Vol & Tone control say sprague? Does it look like the ones in post 14? The other one has probably been changed.
