Look at what I found today, is it the real deal?
Hello fellow Les Paul fans,
I was on my way to taking my Daughters to see the new Karate Kid movie today, and ended up having to kill about a half hour of time before the movie was to start. The girls wanted to go to the mall, but I decided to pay a visit to a local pawn shop to see if they had any left handed guitars in stock. Behind the counter, I saw a lefty Ravin, lefty Ibanez, and a fairly beat up black Les Paul Custom. Of course, I went straight to the custom to see what year it might have been. First thing I noticed was that it had no serial number, and one of the P90's looked a little strange. This put me off right away, but the guitar was different from any LP I have ever had my hands on. Also, the guitar was missing the original bridge, and had an old acoustic floating bridge in it's place. The sales guy knew a little bit about LP's, because he did state that the guitar did not have a pancake body when I speculated that it was an early 70's LP. At this point, I'm beginning to think that this just might be a 50's LP Custom, and the price confirmed that the pawn shop didn't know what the hell it was either. Even with the wear and tear, the price was low regardless of its vintage status. I asked the sales guy to find out how cheap the manager is willing to go, and then began doing some google research from the iphone while he was away. the keywords "gibson les paul custom p90" took me to a page that described a 1954 LPC, which really seemed to describe the guitar I was staring at (no serial #, Alnico V pickup, closed-back ribbed gold tuners, low frets). Sales guy returned offering to take $500 off the guitar, and I sent him back to the manager with a lower offer while I did a bit more research. At this point, I think I'm looking at either a 1973 RI, or a 1954 LPC. Guy doesn't budge on the price, so I accepted his offer and got out of there as fast as I could. The good: It appears to me that the electronics are original. There is one spot that looks like it may have been touched with an iron (wire going to tail stop) but everything else looks untouched. I think the tuners are original, frets seem to match the "fretless wonder" description I read about. The bad: There is some damage between the pickup selector and the fretboard that was covered with a makeshift plastic cover. I removed the cover to expose the damage, and I can't even imagine how that was damaged or worn down. It's a very strange place to see damage, I'd love to hear any theories on how a guitar ends up like this. The knobs are not original, the ABR is missing, the pickup selector knob and plate are gone, the case was not original (but it's a modern gibson case), the frets are very warn. The Ugly: There's a few centimeters of missing binding on the top left of the headstock, and there is a cigarette burn on the headstock binding between the E & A tuners. Although the finish appears to be original, someone shot some spray paint to certain parts of the guitar, namely the damage between the pickup selector and fretboard, back of the guitar, parts of the neck, and back of the headstock. You can see the finish cracks below the spray, so it appears to be a very light coat of paint. I'll start adding some pictures in just a moment, they are almost uploaded to my webserver. Oh, and to answer the question I'm sure everyone is dying to ask. The Karate Kid movie was pretty good. I would really love to believe that I found a 1954 LPC, but I'm not going to talk myself into it. I'm optimistic and I think this is the real deal, but I gotta hear feedback from the experts on this board.

I did the poor mans scale (cheap bathroom scale with and without guitar), and it weighs in at 9 pounds. I paid $1177 US including tax.

Re: Look at what I found today, is it the real deal?
These Waffle Back Tuners are worth quite a bit in & of themselves.
![]() ![]() Have you posted this in the Vintage Forum? Can you get the Date Codes off the POTS? As for what may have happened to the upper bout, my only guess is that it was played to death by a guy that liked to play/strum way up towards the neck. Fretboard & Frets were probably replaced & rebound? Just a guess though. Damn, sure is cool though. Nice Job~!

No, I wasn't certain what it was. Someone moved this thread to the Vintage forum, Is this a sign? >>Can you get the Date Codes off the POTS? If there are date codes on the POTS, they are hidden under a film of corrosion. I'll give it another look tomorrow with some better lighting. >>As for what may have happened to the upper bout, my only guess is that it was played to death by a guy that liked to play/strum way up towards the neck. possible, the fretboard has a great deal of wear. Man, that's a battlescar!

Re: Look at what I found today, is it the real deal?
Pickguard and tuners are worth more than what you paid. This is the score of the new decade. Congrats bro, youve had a very lucky day. This is a 53-54 Custom LP. If you look close it has one of the thin ear tailpieces which was on a 53-54. Mainly a 53. A couple of the pots look like IRC early type. The issues are very easy to fix.
Even in this condition it's worth 8500 to 12k easy. I am jealous as I have every variant of 50's lps but not this one. Do not try to change anything on this guitar other than the Bridge. The post and thumbscrews are still original. Be very careful cleaning the guitar too. I bet that control cavity has never been off.

Re: Look at what I found today, is it the real deal?
Steve, I just PM'ed a very similar estimate.
Also gave him that guy's name who does your gold paint to figure the area between the switch and the neck. So cool! I would switch it to left in a heartbeat if I were you. Maybe take the guard off to preserve it (in case you rest your arm on it while rocking out). Maybe put a repro guard on it. |

Thats probably one of the only guitar I've seen since 2000 that is truly aged. Not any of that relic crap you see nowdays.

Re: Look at what I found today, is it the real deal?
Yeah I went back a saw the finish has had some black paint on it and damb why did they sand that area between the fretboard. That definitely kills the value and the finish being sprayed. It appears the guy put his hand near the fretboard hence maybe thumbplate, the fretboard has lower wear on it. The frets are nearly all worn down. Knobs aren't a big deal, there cheap to replace. To find an original 50's ABR-1 Gold wireless will be expensive, but a new Gibson Gold ABR-1 should be around 50-60 dollars. Just notice the threaded part of the toggle, it has a extended nipple, typical of 53. Many 52 Les Pauls had that type of toggle.
Nice accoustic Fender bullets LOL., Put some Ernie Ball 10's. I wouldn't doubt those are some 13's or higher on there.
