Rick Nielsen's Vintage burst

This pic was in the August 2006 issue of Guitar World featuring the photography of Neil Zlowzower, ::Neil Zlozower:: Legendary Rock Photographer who owns the copyright to this pic. He was kind enough to allow me to copy this and post it on this forum for all to see. Pictures like this one can be purchased on his website. Thanks for allowing me Neil.

Hmm... he must still have a Burst buying habit - that guitar wasn't in the Bill Rich book - but 7 other Bursts were!

That pic isnt as clear as I wanted it. The scanning reduced the quality a bit. In the magazine, you can see all of the severe checking in great detail.

Re: Rick Nielsen's Vintage burst

I saw Cheap Trick once around 1978. They were an opening act (pretty sure for REO) and I had never heard of them before. I enjoyed the show from the moment Rick jumped out on stage with 5 guitars slung around his neck. He'd play one for a while then toss it to a roadie and start playing the next. I remember he played a cherry sunburst Les Paul during the show, but I have no idea if it was a vintage one or not.

I look in the mirror sometimes and ask myself, who is that old guy?

Re: Rick Nielsen's Vintage burst

Rick Nielsen is a fairly underrated guitarist. While he was never EVH, he wrote some great songs with some very "weird" changes in them. One that this just reminded me of is the key change in Surrender. For two verses it's B then for what appears to be no reason at all the 3rd verse is in C. It's almost like a mistake that Cheap Trick just decided to "keep."

Oh and then there's this:

The modulate up one fret to take the song to another level... not all that uncommon a song writing practice!

Re: Rick Nielsen's Vintage burst

I saw them in October for free - they played to opening of a mall near my house, with that American Idol winner (Jordan Sparxx?) opening the show!

The cool thing - the courtyard at the mall was full of kids to see the opener, and they all left when the opener was done. We walked right up to the barricade and I took a bunch of pics of the show. Rick played 23 guitars during the show. This was one of the coolest ones.

Technically, Rick is prolly one of the most talented guitarist of my time. I have seen them prolly 20 times. Is he my favorite guitarist, NO, but I am never disapointed in watching him play a gazillion guitars in a show.

Re: Rick Nielsen's Vintage burst

In Rick Nielsen's book 'GUITARS OF THE STARS' there are a bunch of 'bursts' pictured and the '58 at the start of the book for sure is NOT a 58 Les Paul and the guitar pictured at the start of this thread doesn't look 'right' either.

Would Rick know if it was real? I mean, he has a guitar documented in his book as a 1958 Les Paul Standard and it clearly isn't isn't.

Correction - there are 6 'bursts and 2 others that are not 'bursts.
