Re: 57 goldtop?

Looks ok, but if the seller thinks that anyone in their right mind is going to drop $80k on a guitar from CL? He's nuts!

I had a problem trying to sell one for $250! And it was rare!

This just goes to show how little he actually knows:

"This amazing piece has it all and there has never been a better time to invest in vintage guitars"

WRONG! It's actually quite the oppisite! With the economy still in the shitter, I'm pretty sure that people could think of more important things to do with $80k. Even '59-'60 Standard prices have gone WAY down.

I wish him the best of luck anyway though.

Watch out, those pics were stolen from an ebay auction.

Prymaxe in Garwood New Jersey...this is also where the craigslist ad is from...scam? probably...and the auction makes provision for offers....80k offer anyone? that'd certainly put the scam speculation to rest.

Cool. But I'd be wary, if you're thinking about buying, ask him if he has it listed elsewhere first. That's a killer axe- I love darkbacks.

Wellin theory there never has been a better time to invest ina vintage guitar. With prices at rock bottom or near enough when/if they climb again it's a good investment piece.

Re: 57 goldtop?

$80K to $150K is a pretty big jump.

In this market what do you think a fair price is for this guitar?

I wouldn't pay more than $100K in this economy. But that's just me, and it IS in almost mint condition.

So is a house, which ironically enough, can be had for much less today.

Don't get me wrong. If I had that kind of spare scratch, I'd be all over a vintage LP, but the vintage guitar market (as low as it may be) isn't the best place to be investing right now, because what if (and I say this as optimistically as possible) the economy continues on the "downward spiral", or even flatlines, then that $80k investment turns into a guitar that will actually have to be played.

well, really depends on what your investment horizon is...i think most people would agree that at some point, the vintage guitar market will rebound (like every other market historically). the only reasaon to doubt this would be if one thought the fundamental drivers of value in the vintage market had changed or disappeared (i.e. people just dont want vintage instruments anymore) - this would not seem likely.

of course, the real question is WHEN does the market come back. if one is looking for a longer term investment, and has capital to invest, it may not be a bad time to buy. Even if the current economic conditions persist, its hard to believe that in 20 or 30 years, these vintage instruments arent going to be worth a whole lot more than what they are selling for now, even in real terms (i.e. inflation adjusted)

Re: 57 goldtop?

There was a vitage dealer in Garwood. I don't remember the name as I haven't been up that way in a while. I have never been inside because it is by appointment and they were always closed when I was passin by. His ebay feedback is 1457 with a 100% positive. I'm gonna guess it's legit.

Not for nothing BUT if I am spending $5k or better on a guit....I am also spendin the money for a plane ticket to go see it in person. Anything over $10k and I am also springing for an expert to come authenticate it. But that's just me!

I'm not so sure.

In a lot of other areas of antiques/vintage collectibles the idea of the high-end reproduction is diverting more and more people from buying the real deal.

Replicas often have the same vibe and mojo and work more consistently than older items.

The RI market seems to be gaining a lot of traction and my guess is that it's siphoning a lot of people off who otherwise would have been in the vintage market.

My guess is that 20-30 years from now (when RIs are 30+ years old) people won't even get the difference between a real '59 and a 2010 '59 RI.

Let's wait 30 years and find out
