Re: 53/57 Goldtop

Does anyone besides me ever look at pictures from guitar shows of all the guitars up on stands precariously perched on folding tables and get nervous?

I think that Goldtop guitar is a 1957 P90 that was converted to a trapeze 1953 to preserve the traptails that are all being converted. I knew it was just a question of time before this happed. Or I guess there could be some other explaination?

Re: 53/57 Goldtop

A '57 would have had Humbuckers (except for the early ones?) - but it would definitely had a stop tail regardless of when it was built in '57 (99% of the time) - which makes me think it is a '53.

That said, my luthier has a stock '56 GT which has a trapeze on it - from the factory. It is a strange duck. This COULD have been another like that.

If the above was a "conversion," though - it would have had stop tail studs. And, the low bridge height wrapped under implies a shallow neck angle to me as well.

I'd still take it, though!

I don't recall seeing a price on this one and I honestly didn't pay attention to who had it. Sorry.

I hoped you'd all realise I was kidding about the early 57' P90 being converted to 53' trap? I think that someone put a 57' serial# on it, people do the strangest things when they're " HIGH ".

Re: 53/57 Goldtop

I have seen trap guitars with 57 serial necks as well as 54 wraptails with a 57 serial. Renecks were common. I few sold on ebay over the last few years.

Does your friend the luthier with the 1956 GT with a trapeze have overwrapping strings on the bar since the greater neck angle will permit that since 1954. The odd ball GT guitar in the first photo claiming to be 53'/57' is underwrapped by the strings which make no sense. This guitar would have all the adverse problems that the earlier GT's had and ES Models that over wrapped didn't have. Under wrapping the trapeze bar blocks palm muting and moves the trapeze when hit in any way while strumming, this special ordered trapeze seems out of place when installed on the already corrected greater angled neck that will let it over wrap with greater string pressure holding the trapeze in place and allowing palm muting.

You are very welcome, she plays wonderfully as the faces of the few friends and peers that have played her were "
Priceless" to say the least.
