Re: How much does a neckbreak reduce the value on a vintage instrument?
What guitar?
If done by someone like BCRGreg (invisible repair) - maybe $8k. A solid but ugly repair, maybe $7k. ![]() Know what you're starting with would help, though! |

Re: How much does a neckbreak reduce the value on a vintage instrument?
It's a late sixties LPC. If were not talking about more than a 20-30% reduction, I guess I'm willing to take the risk.

Why would you not expect to receive it with no damager whatsoever, and if there were any damage get ALL of your money back via insurance? Are you interested in a game of Russian Roulette?

Re: How much does a neckbreak reduce the value on a vintage instrument?
I've never bought instruments on the net before, but insurance sounds like the right thing.
I guess that's something the seller asks for when he ships the item? The seller is giving the options of "USPS Priority Mail International" or "USPS Express Mail International", and to me it looks like they only insure up to $5000... (USPS - International Extra Services) |

Re: How much does a neckbreak reduce the value on a vintage instrument?
Neck cracks have never bothered me, if they're properly repaired. I believe that it's stronger than an unrepaired neck.
Most of the guitars that I've lusted after, Page's, Allman's, and Rossingtons, all have had headstock cracks. Definitely doesn't affect the sound, or playability. That being said, my guess is 25%, and I would get it insured before shipping to recoup any potential loss. Make sure that they double boxit. |

Re: How much does a neckbreak reduce the value on a vintage instrument?
Hell yes! I want to go back in time and thank the guy who dropped my '67 ES335 on its face. If it weren't for that headstock repair and general hard use (neglect? not in my book), I couldn't have afforded it, and wouldn't be playing the absolute dogshit out of that beautiful and phenomenal sounding vintage guitar!!
Same with the guy who refinished my '69 Les Paul. God Bless that guy as well!

Re: How much does a neckbreak reduce the value on a vintage instrument?
FWIW...
I got my '59 Special TV with the beat old gator case for $1,999 US plus shipping...refinned( eighties?),neck shave, headstock repair, refretted at least once .Weighs about six and a half pounds, was gigged heavily for years. Parts alone are worth what I paid for it as most if it is original. Most comfortable guitar I know of and yeah,it sounds really great.

Re: How much does a neckbreak reduce the value on a vintage instrument?
Regarding vintage guitars - it depends entirely on the model. Gibson made thousands of Juniors and Specials and Goldtops. Black Beauties - they made less of them than 'bursts. The hit on the value depends on how well the repair is done, who it's done by, and who knows about it!
I'd say between 20% and 40% reduction in value depending on the guitar in question.

Re: How much does a neckbreak reduce the value on a vintage instrument?
I second that motion. For resale or market value, a full headstock break can devalue 50%, a partial break (visible from back only) still devalues 20-30% IMO... hope the axe got to you AOK.
