Re: Mark Knopfler's burst/s
I've seen both his 58 and 59 in person from only a couple feet away. The 58 is gorgeous and has a lot of dings in the finish. There are several parts in his "Real Live Road Running" DVD that have some close up shots of his 58 and you can see a lot of the dings and dents.

Re: Mark Knopfler's burst/s
Oh, and on his new album that came out last week, there are some to die for tones from his Les Pauls. I'm listening to the album now.

Re: Mark Knopfler's burst/s
Hi,
Since about '85, Knopfler started to prefer (yes) the Les Paul. Notice how his typical quacky Strat sound changed into this fat smooth almost Les Paul like sound when he got the Pensa Suhr guitars with the EMG's (2x SA and 1x 85) in it. Since the release of his first true solo album, Golden Heart, Knopfler plays the Les Paul more than his Strats. His main guitar is now a '58 Les Paul (he also has a '59 which he uses a lot), for cleaner bits he still heads back to his signature Fender MK Strats. I saw MK on his last tour and his sound was mind blowing... I never heard a better guitar sound!! I will look for some pics ![]() Cheers< Emiel |

Man... I never thought it would happen again, but I'm back to GASing for another LP.... I'd been preferring my Strat, but I'm a bit burnt out on it.

I know it isn't a burst, but it is an all original 54 Strat. ![]()

Re: Mark Knopfler's burst/s
Yeah, he takes his bursts on the road with him. He takes his '29 National Style O and his 54 Strat too. Some tours he has his '52 Tele as well. I'd be scared to take all of those vintage instruments on the road with me.

Re: Mark Knopfler's burst/s
The Golden Heart tour and DVD show that Knopfler has two Les Pauls... his main one clearly being the faded '58.
I read that in the '80s Knopfler used a '84 reissue of the 1959 Les Paul on Brothers in Arms and Money For Nothing. I found this pic of his three Les Pauls... from left to right: original '59 Les Paul Standard, the '84 '59 reissue, the original '58. Notice the difference in burst! ![]() Here's the '84 reissue again: ![]() I've never seen a recent picture of video of Knopfler with the '84 reissue... but we're talking here about the old ones .Looking at the recent KTGC tour vids, it seems like his main Les Paul is now the '59... I remember he had on some songs a much shinier looking Les Paul, that must be a reissue then? Anyone got some pics? |

Re: Mark Knopfler's burst/s
Emiel, I'm pretty sure he only uses his 58 and 59 on the road now, but back in the 80's he definitely used that 84 RI. I don't think he plays that 84 anymore (on the road at least). On the KTGC tour he did use the 59 more than the 58, but on the Shangri-la tour and the ATRR tour he used his 58 a little bit more than the 59.
When I saw him in July of 07, I got second row tickets and for the last couple songs I stood at the stage leaning up against it. I could've reached up and grabbed his guitar I was so close. He was rockin the 59 on BIA. Seeing it up close was pretty cool. His 54 Strat up close is really nice looking. Lots and lots of aging on it.

Re: Mark Knopfler's burst/s
I have a little thing on DVD that came with one of his albums where he talks about his guitars, his childhood, Dire Straits, etc and he says the reason for the headband was because when he was playing in small clubs he would get so sweaty from the lights. He said he would shake his head and the sweat would get all over the people in the front row. Maybe I can find the video on youtube.
I guess once he got out of the club scene it just kind of stuck.
