Re: jimmy page #1 58' or 59'?

when gibson examined it to make the replicas, they said it was a 59. it could be an early 60 though. its not a 58 because it had a double white PAF in the bridge.

????

maybe you are thinking that 58s were plain tops because the 58 reissues are plaintops? gibson made 58s with various degrees of figuring. there was no "plus top" then.

there were other features that Gibson looked at to confirm it is a 59. His #2 is also a 59. The 58 myth started in the mid to late 70s with a misquote of Jimmy in a magazine article.

No double white PAF's until mid '59, #1 had double whites, hence it's a '59, not '58.

Hypothetically speaking...
If Pages #1 was in fact a 1960 Les Paul - would that increase the value of all the other '60 LPs and bring down the cost of the '59s?
Funny if the true holy grail all these years is actually a 1960 LP.

Its not a possibility so no use pondering that thought.

Both his #1 & #2 are 59's.

His black custom was a 1960 customized, that guitar was stolen in 1970..

Well... Peter Green, Jimmy Page and others all bought a '59 Les Paul because they thought Eric Clapton's was one. Now it turns out Clapton's was a '60s, Green didn't like the neck on his '59 (too thick) and Page shaved the neck of his to make it thinner...

Re: jimmy page #1 58' or 59'?

Not again!

As far as anyone can say with any certainty (the serial # being missing) it is a 1959.

Only one person with direct access to the guitar has ever claimed it was a '58. That was Tim marten who was Page's tech in the 1980s - a long time after the guitar was originally bought from Joe Walsh, and not someone that I've ever heard described as a "burst expert". Marten said it in print twice & the rumours have never died down since...

However: Page has only ever said it's a '59. Walsh said it was a '59. Gibson say it's a '59. The collected & combined opinions of countless LP experts from all over the world (admittedly only looking at photos) say that it's a '59.

Let this one die the death that it should have done...

Not at all.

'59s are sought after for what they are, not because of JP's guitar.

Amongst the real burst collectors #1 is thought of as a bit of a dog. It's an iconic guitar because of Page, but if someone else had owned it, it wouldn't be one of the most revered bursts by a looooooooong way.

Specifically, Page's #1 already had a shaved neck when he bought it. And when he bought his #2 in 1975, he had that neck shaved to match his #1.

I believe only a minority thought it was a 58. Most people I come across always say 59.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with this. They're not sought after for what they are - they're sought after because of the people who played them. Let's be honest here, if a handful of now legendary guitarists didn't pick these guitars up in the mid '60s, the Gibson Les Paul electric guitar would be one for the history books. You can't tell me they're worth a king's ransom because they're rare. A 1979 Gibson Flying V 2 is rare, how much are those worth? Not much, let me tell you...

Page did not shave the neck he says it came that way on it, this might clear some things up,

Agreed. And they wouldn't be able to get thousands of dollars for replicas either.

it's not just that they are rare, but the sound, the way they play, etc.....i agree that they got jump started by the great ones who have played them. i think it is both the fact that they were played by the greats and the fact that the product itself is great. but jimmy page alone did not make them so popular. after buying it in 69, it took a few years before he was really known for his #1 Burst. either way, this is all subjective. everyone is right! haha you gotta love the 59s.

this was in that link above about the history of Jimmy's guitars. no, Page did not shave it, someone else shaved it & refinished it before he bought it. i believe the term he uses in that video is "scalloped". not to be confused with a scalloped fretboard.
