I'll get those pix up tonight, got things to do !!
Hi Brian, That story on the train was on a P.K. forum now defunct/no more, The link that now comes up is for proboards, I have no idea how to access the forums in there, if indeed there is one, I never saved the post either.

Great article and bloody funny! Reminded me I had a bird at that time who drank Creme de Menthe by the bottle!!! She was sophisticated enough to put it in a glass though!

Re: Paul Kossoff
Here's a few more pix as promised, said to be taken at the Newcastle City Hall UK in 72, but myself and a few more of my friends have all agreed it's not the City Hall it may have been the Newcastle Mayfair, Sept 15th or Oct 20th,
what the hell, enjoy. Frank ![]() ![]()

Re: Paul Kossoff
Frank, according to "Heavy Load: the Story of Free" Kossoff had a drug induced fit at the sound check on Sept 15th at the Fillmore North, Newcastle amd this took them off the road (and trashed the Italian tour) until October the 3rd - but they played the Mayfair Ballroom on October the 20th. Great pics!

Re: Paul Kossoff
kossoff is my guitar hero....and he is the most under rated guitarist england has ever produced
it pisses me off. All these blues programs that were on the bbc not so long ago about the blues scene in the 60s...and guitar heros at the bbc programs......there wasnt ONE mention of free or kossoff...... i think it stinks all this shredding modern stuff may be impressive if you dont know much about playing guitar and although it may be difficult to learn, the fact you can learn it means to me its not impressive. Its simiar to tech death metal drumming, fast yes, feel, no....Funky drummers are better, the guys you see playing in R&B bands, hiphop acts etc. Funky guitar playings better, (i think). Its subjective you could argue but, I think less can be so much more if done well. Music is communication beyond words, beyond what the human mind can comprehend. You can learn fast but you cant learn "feel". You either have it or you dont, its not conceptual. Kossoff could say more with one note than many can with 20 |

Re: Paul Kossoff
I taped in England a BBC radio show with John Peel hosting, featuring Free and a live audience, I don't have the cassette anymore, I had a Phillips cassette recorder, they developed the cassette format and I also remember taping a Neil Young show back then as well.
What a geat show it was and back in 1969 or so when I recorded the show, I remember what a great band Free was, no weak link. Kossoff's playing was so unique and his vibrato still unique to this day. I wonder where that show is now in the collectors network, "Fire and Water" had just come out...great memories!! Emerald

Re: Paul Kossoff
Here's a cool one from the Koss thread on LPF (Someone posted all my screen shots so why not?
)![]() Flashriffs, you said that Gibson are thinking about doing a Koss sig... IMO they HAVE to do the stripped burst, its one of the most unique bursts ever, and the one most people identify Koss with. In saying that though, I have a feeling it'll be too much for them, and I bet they'll take the easy road and go with one of his other ones. I don't really care that much for sigs, but if they do the stripped burst I think we might at last get to see some decent pictures of it. ![]() Do you know who owns it these days? |

Re: Paul Kossoff
I was lucky enough to see FREE live at MSG in NY. They were supporting Blind Faith. They had a great sound and his playing was so subdued, yet powerful. I remember him playing what looked like a sunburst LP. Great show. He died way too young. RIP.

Re: Paul Kossoff
Hi, Ride on Pony,
I've just emailed my mate asking him if there's anymore info on which burst Gibson are going to reissue, I'll let you know if there's any progress, for what it's worth I dont think we have any say on which one they make, neither do I know on what it is that make's them decide on which one they do make. I would like to think it's the A.R. burst simply on the detailed pix I sent them, but who knows. I was talking to my mate last week who plays guitar in a Free tribute band and at one of his gigs this year, you will never guess who turns up....only the guy who owns the stripped burst, WITH the very guitar to show the band it, how cool is that.....Frank

edit: Arthur Ramm. After I did some detective work, it appears you Kossoff guys use abbreviations a lot. Kind of confusing "code" talk, I guess. Thank you for this thread. It appears I passed over Paul Kossoff's contributions far too easily in the past. An amazing fellow.

Re: Paul Kossoff
UK 'Guitarist' mag did an oldies but goodies feature on the stripped LP & the Darkburst with some great pictures. I seem to remember a guy in Newcastle UK now owns the Stipped LP. If I can find it, I'll scan it in.

Please tell me you are using a tremelo arm, because if not, your vibrato is insane.

Re: Paul Kossoff
For what it's worth and digging under the skin for just a moment, I think a lot of the attraction with Paul is the fact that his playing never left you thinking you couldn't do it yourself.......I hope I'm articulating this right, but everything he did was "accesible"....does that make sense?

Re: Paul Kossoff

no tremelo arm- just my arm/wrist doing the tremeloing i guess i really got into it..it was lets say a "emotionally charged" gig because my brother plays bass with us and....theres been some stuff going on within the band, people not getting on etc and him being my brother its been very difficult as ive been kinda stuck in the middle...this recording was his last gig....since the band started really he has been with us so........it was a final Mr Big and was kinda..........put your heart and soul into it....i just jumped in and let it all out.....so thats me shouting through the guitar maybe in a way ha. i know i do dig hard when playing...aggressive i guess you could say, just the way i play. My guitar can talk and say things better than i could ever by speaking. Its how Ive always felt. Im very quiet off the guitar and I make a racket while on it. and quoting cookie boy "For what it's worth and digging under the skin for just a moment, I think a lot of the attraction with Paul is the fact that his playing never left you thinking you couldn't do it yourself.......I hope I'm articulating this right, but everything he did was "accesible"....does that make sense? " i think maybe your missing the point??? maybe? its all about the feel and what you put into the playing....its not about trying to be flash and technical and all "look at meeee" its more like....."Hey listen to this....but not in a egotistic way.........pure expression letting the guitar do the talking. I think some can understand the language and some dont......but I know kossoffs playing speaks to me in a big way, I dont hear it, I feel it. Not sure if any of that made any sense........ that comment i just wrote wasnt meant to sound.....angry or......anything.......just an explanation of what ithink its about...so dont take it as negative please...i know its easy to take things the wrong way on forums... Re: Paul Kossoff
I think you're right. Most of Koss' work is relatively 'simple' (In comparison to alot of what's out there) and it certainly doesn't confuse the ear at all, its just the emotion and power that makes it special.
