Stairway to Heaven solo on a vintage 68 Gold Top and on a vintage 68 Custom

Several people have asked me why I don't play any of my other guitars that hang on my wall. The answer is that most of them are vintage collector guitars. But to demonstrate what they sound like, I pulled two of them out last night and made videos of me playing the solo to Stairway to Heaven on them. On both guitars, I used the middle position on the toggle. The playing is not perfect. But these videos are for demonstrations of the guitars & their sound.

Here is the 1968 Les Paul Standard Gold Top - gotta love the hum on the P90s!!!! (NOT!)

And here is the 1968 Les Paul Custom. It is all original (special ordered with gold reflector cap knobs) and has the original fretless wonder frets. It is really hard to bend the strings on those frets & make it sound right. In fact, it made my ring finger on my left hand cramp so that I could not get it done. This is one of the first 1968 Customs. Many of them had pre T-Top patent pickups, which were essentially the same thing as PAFs with a patent number.

haha Thanks Tech. I am toying with the idea of getting an Eric Johnson strat. I guess the P90s in the GT are Gibson's answer to the Fenders. Fenders don't make as much noise though. I plan to start another thread with a demo of 4 different sounds / settings on my Murphy aged Page Les Paul: toggle in lead position (bridge pup), toggle in rhythm position (neck pup), toggle in middle position (both pups out of phase), and toggle in lead position again with the push / pull pot in the up position for single coil (again, sort of an answer to the telecaster).

I like the Eric Johnson strat, the neck can feel a little sticky though, I also love the Thin skin range, you can get a 54 with a 9'5" radius, not a flat as the 12" of the EJ but i think they can look more like the Vintage Strat's he used to use live. If you do get a strat and hum drives you crazy have a look at Suhr's (BPSSC) System.

The demo of the Pickup/push-pull sounds would be good to see.

Wow! Great playing. They both sounds incredible. I'm partial to the custom's sound. You can really hear the pick hitting the strings. awesome.

Very nice, Jimmy! I just synced them up too; even the shut-off move was the same. No doubt, they both sounded cool.....but the custom was cooler.

Thanks for the comparison.
