When I saw them live during the Sticky Fingers tour, he played a LP Standard - since he has some really vintage ones, it could be a 1958-1960, but - sorry - don't know for sure what he used on the recording.

Re: Mick Taylor - Sticky Fingers

I can't find any specific info on those years either. I am inclined to believe that they experimented and used quite a few different combinations.

"On July 3, 1969, the Stones received news that Jones had drowned in his swimming pool. They were scheduled to play a free concert two days later at Hyde Park and were going to cancel until drummer Charlie Watts said they should play as a tribute. The concert, filmed by Granada television, was broadcast as "The Stones In The Park" and serves as an interesting document of the "new" Stones, lurching (as opposed to majestically rising) phoenix-like from the ashes. Jagger asks the crowd to "be cool for a minute" so he can eulogize Brian via a reading of poet Percy Shelley's "Adonais," after which several hundred butterflies are released from stage. Taylor uses the SG/Les Paul for most of the concert, but is also shown using the Richards Les Paul to play slide on the gloriously raucous blues "I'm Yours and I'm Hers." HiWatt amplifiers can be seen on the stage behind Taylor and Richards."

"....subsequent film Gimme Shelter or listen to the myriad of bootlegs that cropped up in the tour's wake. For all intents and purposes, Taylor made use of the SG/Les Paul for the tour, though photos also show him with a Gibson ES-345 (interestingly, in the film Richards can be seen playing a Les Paul that belonged to Taylor). Ampeg was the amp brand of choice for that tour and the 1972 tour (immortalized in the film Ladies and Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones). "

Re: Mick Taylor - Sticky Fingers

I remember reading a great article on Sticky Fingers ( but I can't remember where ?)
I was surprised that there were a few songs that Keith wasn't on at all
Like "Sway" was Jagger and Talyor on guitars and I think "Moonlite Mile"
as well.............. I'll try to look for it again..

Re: Mick Taylor - Sticky Fingers

Theres some good stuff out there on the Stones and their recordings.
It seems like the only song on Sticky Fingers thet Taylor Plays a LP is Sway, Mick plays rhythm. Sway and Moonlight Mile are the 2 tracks that Keith sits out on guitar.
Can't You Hear Me Knocking and Dead Flowers, the brown ES-345.
You Gotta Move, slide on a Tele.
Brown Sugar is on a Strat? Go figure? Jimmy Johnson says that the band brought to the studio and used Fender Twins on this and some others songs during the sessions.
My fav is Bitch and all I saw was that Keith used a Dan Armstrong Plexi guitar on this one.
In Muscle Shoals Ry Cooder played slide on a few tracks like my other fav Sister Morphine.

I like Black and Blue better and Keith skipped a few songs on that record too. Taylor had left and Wood was just starting out. To me Harvey Mandel plays great on that one?

And Mick with his ragged company, bursts +2>>>

Could the 2 Mick's be any more different? Its a wonder that Taylor lasted as long as he did with his hatered of the glitz of it all?

I read in Guitar Player mag years ago that when Mick first came to the studio to join the band Keith had a 'burst for sale with a Bigsby, and that's what Mick bought. He said he had no idea why Keith was selling it.

Re: Mick Taylor - Sticky Fingers

I know he liked his Gibsons played through Fender amps. For some reason to me that Sticky Fingers tone sounds like a LP through a 4x10 Bassman to me. It has that wonderful mild overdrive those amps are famous for.

Re: Mick Taylor - Sticky Fingers

Thanks all, I have the 61' SG (2000), A lot of nice amps. Just wish I had his skill, looks like he uses a lot of minor penatonic scales to me. I always thought the Stones were best with him, especially live. Wood is a mess a lot of the time.

This is a guitar that was used by Mick Taylor and Keith Richards during the latter stages of Exile On Main St and on the 1972 USA tour. Taylor took it with him when he left the Stones and sold it to Guitar Grapevine in Denmark Place, London in the early 80's. I took these photos.

In fact this is the very same guitar that Keith is playing in your avatar Billy - taken at Sunset Sound Studios LA in 1972.

Actually Mick bought it well before that when he was playing with John Mayall. He went to Regent Sound and bought the guitar from Ian Stewart.

From what I heard from a very trusted source is that the Stones have a storage "room" in Manhatten, the same building as Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (my guitar teachers buddy is there guitar tech) from what he told me The Stones have an entire floor of the storage building filled with vintage guitars, amps, pianos etc. I really wish I could take a peek at whats in there but he said its literally an entire floor with nobody else's storage stuff but theres. Pretty amazing.

Is this the guitar that was for sale on an auction in London a couple of weeks ago?
