Re: Vintage vs RI

Man, its really hard to do, having played just maybe under a dozen 57-60 Les Pauls, and some very nice conversion pieces as well, The Mid 90s to present 50 Re issues are some great guitars but that old wood many times has a magic all its own . The necks on the newer ones feel all together different to me, the pickups are not real PAF's the caps are not paper in oil Spragues,
Can you compare a 65 Deluxe Reverb vintage to the new re issue ? I can say good things about both but give me a choice and I will go with the vintage, not because of the increased value, but the true older tone

Re: Vintage vs RI

Try these...

YouTube - Mike Bloomfield: Drinking Wine Live!!
YouTube - 1952 Vintage Les Paul with Paf pickups
YouTube - more 1952 gibson les paul tones

The old ones have a clarity and dryness to their tone that I have not heard in a historic. You can get recordings of historics which sound at least similar, but in the room or playing, there is a big difference.

Don't play one, and you'll be fine. If you do, you're in trouble.

Re: Vintage vs RI

Hearing Gary Moore play his main '59 burst and his Gary Moore Signature,
both live at the same concert, I honestly couldn't say which sounded the best.
Maybe it's my ears that aren't that good ? I don't know ,but both guitars sounded great. Is it the amp and player that provide most of the tone that we search for?

Gary Moore tends to play with quite a bit of distortion. The difference isn't as great in that type of situation. The other thing can be volume. I've been to shows where the volume was so friggin loud that I couldn't really hear any of the nuances of the guitar's tone. I've done quite a few of these A/B comparisons, and the difference has been immediately apparent. You really have to play and feel the difference to appreciate it. It's like trying to talk about sex.

I 've played both the guitars Gary played that night ,but the point I'm making is ,I think, that the skill of the player and his ability to manipulate both
guitar and amp plays a bigger part in the overall sound than the guitar itself.
