Question 1960 dc special measurements?

Hey Folks,
Im new to the forum, and I am looking for some measurements for a 60s lp dc special, version 2. (the one with the moved neck pickup) I need the distance from the fretboard end to the front of the neck pickup, the distance between pickups, and the fretboard width at both ends. Also, neck tenon width and length if you can. The measurements could also be taken from a mid 90s re-issue. Any help would be great.
-Erin R.

Wouldn't the measurement from any Historic DC Special work?

I dont know much about the guitar, so im not sure if it is titled as a "reissue."

Does it have the inked serial number? And it should not have a tune-o-matic bridge.

The one in lexluthier's avatar is NOT a reissue.

stamped serial number. but it does have an ABR-1 bridge. Its the heritage cherry version of his avatar basically.

Re: 1960 dc special measurements?

Ekoms,
Im pretty sure that would work...does it have a bound fingerboard? Got a photo? The one in my avatar is a re-issue (not historic) it had the sticker on the PG that I photoshoped out. So, the one that Ekoms has would work....It does NOT have to be a "historic" re-issue....sorry for the confusion.

Re: 1960 dc special measurements?

Ekoms,
Thanks. I will also take the measurements from Mikes Guitar...I owned that same 90's special...was a good guitar, but the neck was too big....so now, I am going to build my "ultimate special" Thanks again.

Good luck! I'm guessing your going for a TV yellow type finish?

be sure to post lots of pics once you start your build too!

Re: 1960 dc special measurements?

yep...yellow it is....I will post some up...funny thing is, the body is already cut out and sanded to shape, the neck blank is squared and the rod slot cut into it. I have not decided to go with a one piece neck or a scarf joint for better strength. Im not going for an absolute dead on copy, but from 5 feet, could probably fool the pros.

Re: 1960 dc special measurements?

Nice! That just means less of a wait for us people who like to watch builds.

I've been toying with the idea of making myself a junior, but I really dont want to build the neck. The body could still be ok if I mess it up, but the neck could easily become a disaster. I wonder if someone would build me just a neck I'll have a looksi into it I guess.

Necks usually take the longest time to make...keep watching that auction site...ive seen a few of them come and go over the years.

Lex...got your emails. Will get you all you need for you in the next couple of days.

I'll also record some measurements from my '59 as well. The '59 has the P-90 moved away from the neck as well, like a '60.

No idea...it was refinned in TV yellow when I bought it.I'm guessing it was done 15-20 years ago and as far as I can tell and what I was told,it came from Gibson in TV.It was heavily gigged for years and has it's share of issues, but nearly all the parts are original.

It came from San Fran so I'm guessing someone in that area did it.

Parts are worth more than what I paid for it.

Re: 1960 dc special measurements?

Well even though it is generally agreed refins hurt the value, I do not totally agree. If done properly, I am all for it. I would love to own a 60 Special as nice as yours.

I have often thought of sending the TV for a proper restore. However I would not recoup the money I spend on it,on resale, in the near future. It is and will always be a mutt,a player.

I'm currently going through this with my '69GT.I bought it cheap as it is a refin and I'm having it reshot and as the frets are so-so, having it refretted. If I have to sell it anytime soon,no doubt I will not get back what I have into it.

Re: 1960 dc special measurements?

hey guys,
Thanks for all the info so far. I was talking with a fellow guitar builder today, and as luck would have it, he has offered to trade me some misc gear I have laying around for a faded cherry lpdc special. I know, not vintage, and not historic re-issue, but a very kind gesture that I will be taking him up on....As he put it "to get you by until the build is done" All I could say is WOW.
Depending on how cool it truly is, it may slow down the build....

Why are you posting questions on the forum and answers by private e-mail?
Is there some reason not to share with others?

Re: 1960 dc special measurements?

Im not sure who this is directed at, but if the folks that I have asked for the measurements from want to post the information, that is thier right and responsibility whether they choose to or not....Many people are fairly sensitive about information, myself included sometimes. It is up to the folks giving the information to decide whether they want the information to be "public knowledge" Its a courtesy thing.
