"cheapest" entry to PAFs

Is an early "Les Paul" SG the cheapest way to get into a PAF equipped Gibson?

Are you after the PAF's or the Guitar?

If you are after PAF's the lowest cost option is probably Early Patent No.'s ('63 / '64 for example) that have a Black & White Lead. Then buy a set of Vintage Long Magnets & swap the Shorts for Longs. This is arguably the lowest cost Vintage Pickup option IMHO.

If you want the Guitar then I guess an SG may well be the way to go or even an ES 345................& you can get ES 175's for ever lower money.

Not sure I would approach Vintage PAF then Guitar, seems ass about but I am not entirely sure of exactly what you are after.

Of course there are great boutique pickup options but again not sure what you are after.

Good luck.

Re: "cheapest" entry to PAFs

Thanks for the helpful answer. Not sure what inside joke I am missing but I dont get the smart azz replies.

I have an early 60s 345 but not with PAFs and have always wanted to get back on board since selling my 59 335.

The SG might be the go. Gruhns have a nice one with a headstock repair for 8k that looks lovely

and to asnwer your question in a civil matter, unless you are reallyinto SG's, dont buy one just for the PAFs, you can get a set of vinatge ones from reliable sources and then buy a killer custom shop les paul and put them in, it will still be cheaper then buying a vintage 61 Les Paul(SG)

I have thought about an R7 set up like that but am a vintage guy. I had a 67 that I foolishly sold many moons ago.

Re: "cheapest" entry to PAFs

There have been sh@t storm threads over questions less subjective than this. And replies like this after only 4 post's have been known to start them.

"Not sure what inside joke I am missing but I dont get the smart azz replies."

But with only 29 post's in 3 yrs i guess you wouldn't know that.

I meant it as a joke.

+ 1, heaps of us have Eric, as you know. You would have known way before I did.

I prefer the Double Black Lead '62 EP's but hey, I don't like to advertise that fact & they do cost way more money.

Cheers, Rudi

Everybody should keep 1950s P90s in their parts drawer, just in case (for the magnets).

You could get a PAF Barney Kessel from about 1963 for under 6000.

Find an old ES-5 with 3 PAFs still in place.

1958 Orig Gibson Switchmaster ES 5 Vintage | eBay

Not from Eddie Vegas per se, but a lower cost seller.

Good luck finding a totally intact one - they usually get robbed of their pickup rings and other 'Burst parts'.

Re: "cheapest" entry to PAFs

The OP asked about the "cheapest way to get into a Gibson PAF guitar." A switchmaster or PAF ES-295 are expensive models compared to the Kessel.

It depends. Does the op want a guitar with PAFs or just the pickups? I think it would be easier to go on with this discussion if we clarify this point.

Re: "cheapest" entry to PAFs

Question kind of has two parts

1. If one were looking at all the paf equipped guitars available which model is the cheapest
2. And this is the part I wasnt clear on... Of those which do I fancy the most? This would be answered as we go along.

So far, 295, and SG are my choices of the "cheaper" PAF equipped guitars

Chris you would also have to take in to account the Guitar itself with regard to what you intend to play on it.

If you want to play Jazz, or any clean stuff without winding up the wick, the 295 would work.

You would have problems if you want to play Rock, with or without Gain at higher volumes.

It will more than likely squeal like the proverbial stuck you know what.

The SG will not, as we all know from watching Angus Young.

I have heard of these being fitted with posts that connect the top & the back which apparently works pretty well but not sure what that does to the inherent tone of these.

Of course, Ted Nugent uses & owns many Gibson Byrdlands which are Thinline Archtops.
