Re: Les Paul Deluxe.

They sure have................and in the '70s we all routed them to put in the "proper" humbuckings! The originals sound great.

What's ironic is that LP Standards were $899 and Deluxes were $799......we payed more than the $100 difference to buy DiMarzios and get the routing done!

in 74, I paid exactly $327.60 for my first brand spanking new Gold Top Les Paul it was a factory second with some lines on the gold top . Norlin Seconds were factory Finish Flaws . The guy who stole that guitar , in some ways did me a favor, though then I didnt realize it, got cought, did time and had to pay me back as well, I got my Kalamazoo LP out of it .
I do remember Barry Bailey of Atlanta Rhthym Section was one guy who always used his gold top deluxe, never changed pickups and always had a good tone round 76, Gibson conned Dickey Betts into an endorsement deal, I saw him once then and once around 83 using what looked like the same red sunburst deluxe

Re: Les Paul Deluxe.

Its funny you should mention Mr Betts because when I play my deluxe I allways end up doing Allman bros stuff on it. The sound of both epiphone pickups on is very southern to me.

Re: Les Paul Deluxe.

Before I had mine routed (1975) I put a P-90 in the neck position....it matched real well with the stock mini.

When and where I grew up, We'd jam at least two Allman Brothers song at about every jam I went to, One day my bass playin buddy, and ride to jams calls me and asks me if I know this cat named Scott C. We go over his house, he had just gotten a LP Custom from his Daddy, Scott was a Alice Cooper nut, We tried a few other tunes , got in a lil argument , the Brett my bass playin bud says, Lets just do some Allman Brothers, and Scott C, says " Who, what, Allman, Osmond? He didnt have a clue ! We left there bout 6 minutes later

The prices of the 70's guitars have definitely gone up. I am not selling but I keep my eye on the market just for curiosity. My '74 LP Standard was a special order flame sunburst. Some of the "books" have them around $4000+ without the flame. I had mine recently appraised during the summer at $5000. There is a thread somewhere in here where there's a store selling a '74 plain top for $1800.00. That's cheap! If I had the cash I would go and take a look at it to see what kind of condition it was in and buy it as an investment. The 70's LP's are appreciating at about 15% a year. Not bad!

I would imagine that the Deluxes are slightly less at the moment, since they are not as rare as the 71-75 Standards which could only be gotten by special order from Kalamazoo.

Re: Les Paul Deluxe.

I paid $315 in 1969 for a GT Deluxe. I could never come to really love it.
Sure wish I had her now.

I had a '70 GT Deluxe that was 1700 when I got it a few years ago. You'd shit yourself if you knew what I sold it for.

I paid $350 for my Deluxe in '89, and $325 for my Double Cut Special a few months later. Both are '77's. Nobody but me wanted 'em then!!!

My '76 started life as a Deluxe, but was already converted in '86 when I bought her. I paid $350 back then.

Re: Les Paul Deluxe.

I had a new 71 Cherry Sunburst Les Paul Deluxe with the tiny pickups
someone stole it though, broke my heart, ended up getting
a Guild SG to replace it.

That's what I have in my 80 tobacco burst deluxe right now. Only the bridge mini-hum is a non-original 69'. I've been fighting the urge to route it for regular hums for a while now. Hopefully the Custom I'm getting will stave off that temptation.

Re: Les Paul Deluxe.

The guitar that I kick myself over the most to this day was a 74 Deluxe Blue Sparkle Top, it had a repaired headstock, but I got it for $400! I've seen people ask 5K for them now. It was great player too.

Re: Les Paul Deluxe.

who'd ever thought 70's LPs would be investments?

I was browsing Gbase the other day, thought I'd check to see what white '74 Customs were worth now - 2 on there - 1 is $6K the other $7K.

the world has gone crazy.

Re: Les Paul Deluxe.

yeah, I sold my '68 gt for $375. My late '69/early '70 GT cost me ten times that much.....but worth every penny.

Paid $400.00 for my '78. I've kept it in pretty good shape all these years.

Like many, it's marked 'second' though I could neverfigure out why.

Now that looks really nice! I love mini humbuckers, glad to see your deluxe has still got them.

Re: Les Paul Deluxe.

I had an '81 deluxe that I purchased new and was an exceptional guitar. Sadly, It had to go to make room for the R9 I wanted. I played it for 24 years and doubled my money when I sold it...not bad I guess.

Re: Les Paul Deluxe.

I bought my wine red Deluxe new in 79 for $704.00. I put a Dimarzio SD in the bridge but it was a direct drop in mini-humbucker size so I didn't have to do any routing. I wish I still had that guitar for the memories alone.

Re: Les Paul Deluxe.

i've been torn between buying new or old. i stumbled upon the les paul deluxe and being that i just bought a studio, i thought mini hums would be a great addition for a tone chaser like myself. is there any reason why they stopped making them? was it because people were buying them just to get routed?

Re: Les Paul Deluxe.

You should hear the rewound vintage mini's that Will Boggs wound for my '69goldtop. Phenomenal tone that rivals any full size humbucker. This goldtop isn't going anywhere in my lifetime. With the Rarity of vintage mini's I have managed t pick up a few mint '69 pairs for future use.
