Wow. Wow! Wow!!!!!

The finish is so clean, yet the headplate seems to have been rubbed by a polishing compound or something.

Re: new 'Burst introduction

Thanks for sharing such detailed photos of your beautiful refin' (and of the rest of the guitar, which -I guess- has a fair bit of its own intrinsic beauty!).

Did you photograph the back, at all?
While top carves sure are alluring, the real money shot -for me- is that vast expanse of beautiful old mahogany, especially when its cherry finish has gone all orangey, with plenty of vibrant cherry pore filler pokin' through.

I am intimately familiar with this guitar & its restoration. It is indeed a real Burst that Tom put a major load of work in to restoring back to its former glory.

This is an example of opening a mouth to change feet!

Seems so. I failed to read through Tom's explanation in page 2. My bad.

Bad refin for the previous guy.

Amazing as always, Tom

G.B had to have a very lengthily eye exam after the W.O.M.D fiasco, I think you are entitle to one too.

Re: new 'Burst introduction

Thanks to everyone for the very kind remarks. I'm really happy that everyone (or almost everyone) seems to be enjoying the pictures. Again, a special thanks to the owner for allowing it!
Here are a few more photos I took today of an all original 1957 ES-225 this one is near mint. Almost perfect factory finish with just the slightest checking here and there. The file marks are still on the fretboard even. Anyway, the finish might be a bit to 'grainy" for goodasaf, but this time he can blame the fine forks at Kalamazoo

Do you mean the little stippling? that's in the maple (mostly… the finish on the 50's guitars was only sanded with a rough sanding, which you can see in the reflections on 'mint' examples, then the whole thing was sprayed down with retarder to melt away the sanding marks, and the over spraying of the retarder sometimes causes a slight orange peel look, but finer than orange peel) it's just the way the wood and finish is supposed to look. the finish also sinks back and reveals all the grain, and with a closed pore wood it reveals this specific graining. the back does the same, but a bit more pronounced with the open pore structure of the wood. all this is discussed in the book "Gibson Guitars: Ted McCarty's Golden Era 1948-1966" which I recommend if you are interested in this stuff, which you apparently are.
All maple is different, and the lacquer sinks into the grain differently, but that's the way it is unfortunately (or fortunately, depending how you see it). Even your brand new guitar will eventually look this way in time. this doesn't happen to EVERY guitar, but none of them have a perfectly smooth surface, that's for sure.
Anyway, If you would like to discuss the ins and outs of the way lacquer works, I'm all for it, but lets take it to PM's rather than cluttering up this photo thread.

I could probably spot a refin.........................but in this case why be a smart ass & say it when I already knew it was a refin, so there was nothing to spot.

Re: new 'Burst introduction

[quote=alk-3;3732814]Hey everyone. I thought you guys might like to see this guitar. It's an 'uncirculated' burst that I've had in the shop for the last few (several) weeks. It's not all that often that these come through the shop, so I took the opportunity to photograph it well, as well as document every last detail about it. Most of the hardware is original, but the pickups and rings in these photos are reproduction - the owner had the originals with him at the time of the photo session.
Many thanks to the kind owner of this one for allowing these photos to be shown!
This is from 1959. No breaks, no funky routs, no real surprises. I hope you guys like it!

The fretboard is amazing. So worn in that it almost looks scalloped and such a waxy look. It must be so comfortable to play.

Thanks Tom and cheers to the owner for sharing.
