P90 Soapbar to dogear conversion

Just wondering if anyone has done this and how difficult it is?

And the point of this exercise would be...?
Purely cosmetic?

Yep, it you have a soapbar P90 that needs to go in a guitar that requires dogears, simply transfer the inner workings on a dogear base plate, get a dogear cover and you are set! (oh, and mounting screws for a dogear too)

The point is that I have a old Soapbar that I'd like to use as a dogear.

Will any baseplate fit or have the specs changed over time? The soapbar is from the late '50's to early '60's

Re: P90 Soapbar to dogear conversion

Why not just put a dogear cover on and then you're done. It's been learned that some 50s LP juniors, for instance, have regular P-90 pickup (including baseplate) lurking under a dogear cover.

Makes it a pretty simple process.

Gotcha...I was imagining that you had a guitar with soapbars and you wanted to put dogears in it.
Duh.
Now back to your regularly-scheduled program.

Re: P90 Soapbar to dogear conversion

A soap bar can be used for a solidbodied P90 rout but not for a Hollow bodied guitar. A dogear P90 has a different screw bar underneath the bobbin which will not have the screw holes drilled out for the two inner mounting screw holes. The base plate and screw bar are different. It can be drilled out, but the heat can melt the bobbin and hurt the winding. I have seen people take the wings off of Dog ear baseplate, but still have to replace the polescrew bar. Some dogear P90 bobbins have the two inner screw holes, but not on the bar and base plate. When searching for P90's on the web all these things have to be considered.

Re: P90 Soapbar to dogear conversion

Thanks for the info guys. I had no idea that you could put a soapbar in the rout with a dogear cover over the top. I thought it would have been too tall as soapbars usually have spacers that dog ears don't. I'm going to give it a try. That said, if anyone has an old dogear baseplate they don't mind parting with shoot me a PM.

There were some '58 Juniors shipped with soapbars under dog ear covers, from the factory.
