He doesn't really look like a 70's guitar god in that picture with the short hair and cleaned up look....

What year was that? The drummer looks almost the same today.

Re: Pearly Gates Vintage Pix
Here's Billy's band just before "ZEE ZEE"...Moving Sidewalk...they opened for Hendrix and the Doors, broke up in '69...
The current lineup for ZZ Top was in place since 1969...first LP was in 1970. The pic must have been right in between... mark

Re: Pearly Gates Vintage Pix
It's only 10 years old in those photos and look how it's faded!

Re: Pearly Gates Vintage Pix
Damn, this guitar is amazing. I would kill to own that 9-1176 (only 5 numbers after Pearly) that was on sale in the bay few months ago... Both got AMAZING top, what I wouldn't do for that guitar :P

Re: Pearly Gates Vintage Pix
A lot of what you hear on the recordings could be transistor amps so it's not too much of a surprise.
Here is a quote by Terry Manning - who worked and engineered for them for over 18years - regarding the Deguello sessions : "But the main amplifier for most solos was a transistor head, located in the control room, running out to a 4 x 12 Celestion spkr cab in the studio. I have before named this amplifier head, but I will refrain from doing so here...I am very tired of mentioning something one day, and seeing the price double on E-bay the very next day (and I need to get me one)." For full reference see the thread over at PSW - scroll down to the lengthy reply by Terry (Compasspnt): Terry - "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide"? barks |

Re: Pearly Gates Vintage Pix
http://prorecordingworkshop.lefora.c...ionwide/page2/
In 1981, while playing with Rick Derringer, we toured Arena's opening for ZZ Top. They had a W A L L of empty speaker cabinets on stage. At the back of the six foot high stage sat a 1X12 blonde Mesa Boogie with a mic on it. Next to it sat a roadie in a chair, bending over and changing a small array of pedals by hand. They also played, as encores, two songs with a video projection behind them. Next to the amp at the back of the stage sat, what looked like, a 1/2 4 track reel to reel with a loop tape. On the floor sat a rectangular box with four square buttons. Another roadie pushed these buttons during different sections of the song triggering (so to speak) the respective horn parts. Frank spent the entire song looking over his left shoulder at the video, appearing to get the tempo from the "bopping' of themselves in the video. Crude, to be sure. But it worked. This is the best I can describe it. I'm not making this up. We were on the road with them for quite a while, and myself and the entire band tended to sit on the side of the stage every night watching the show. Unprecedented. Also. No wedges on stage. Just side fills. It was so cool opening for them because we had SO much room. And they drew a wicked cool audience. Beautiful woman dancing in the aisles. After a brief break, the band would return to perform "She Loves My Automobile" and "Hi-Fi Mama." Both songs were performed with pre-recorded horn section parts; a video shown behind the stage featured Gibbons, Hill, and drummer Frank Beard playing saxophones. Gibbons introduced themselves as the "Lone Wolf Horns," a nod to their manager Bill Ham who was a part of the Lone Wolf Management Company in Austin, Texas.
