The "other" '54...naked
Sonically naked that is. Thought that I'd record it through the lowly Super Champ XD on the clean channel, cranked, with nothing between the guitar and amp. Not very much gain, so hopefully not much masks the guitar essence (other than sloppy playing, which doesn't have anything hiding it.)
The guitar itself was (supposedly) refinished at the factory in '58. It's not as pristine as the Goldtop, but has a mojo all it's own. Tone-wise, I prefer this one on the bridge pickup, and the Goldtop in the next position. "feel"-wise, the goldtop is lighter, but the neck on this is slimmer (they're both actually rather on the slim side...) ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: The "other" '54...naked
Looks-wise, this one seems to generate a love-hate response. I was originally thinking that I'd try to verify that the guitar was refinished at Gibson in '58 (as it was purported to be) by some means or other, but looking into what's involved with doing that, and the fact that unless I uncover a work order I wouldn't be sure anyway, I figure that I'd just leave it...
One of these days maybe I'll figure out how to really record these but it's been fun for a hacker lime me in the mean time... |
