Well, there was no '61 or '62 Les Paul, There was the SG Les Paul till '68 when Gibson returned to produce the les pauls.

Anyawy, the subject - the tailpiece is indeed incorrect for 50's Les Pauls.

That's where the tailpiece needs to be if it was a 50's les pauls -

This is something I've always been quite confused about.
When the subject comes up, everyone I've read here says no Les Pauls (LP body style) were made in 61.
A good friend and former band mate had a 61 LP Gold Top that was confirmed by GC here as being a 61 when he traded it in (as a side note he got several thousand $$ for the trade in and would have gotten more except the neck had been reset).
Also there is this currently advertised at Willie's.
Willie's American Guitars - Gibson Electrics - 1961 Gibson Les Paul Custom

Can someone please end the confusion for me.

I have a feeling Customs may have been discontinued in 1961, but I could be wrong.

Confirmed Burst and LP Customs to 61 and that's a Fact. The were rolled over to that year. But no production guitars of those LP guitars when the SG shape came into effect.

Can you provide a pic of 61' burst or something? I'm pretty surprised since I've always thought they switched to SG shape right in the beginning of '61.

Re: Craigslist - Daddy's Guitar

I was talking to someone a couple months back and he said his friend has a beautiful "early 60s" Les Paul. I said it would have to be a 1960 but he said it was not. I believe he said '63 or '64. I told him that was impossible. He said that's the year of the guitar. I reiterated that was impossible. It went back and forth like this for a while.
So maybe it was, as mapleflame said, a 1961 rollover. Or maybe it was a late-60s model and he was mistaken.
Either way, it's good to know there were 1961 LPs.

They actually changed to the SG shape in '60. Tom Whittrock has his doubts, he's pretty certain that its a '60.
This is the supposed '61 burst.

Looks like a real Norlin. It is absolutely not a burst.

Re: Craigslist - Daddy's Guitar

The questions is even if it is a norlin, is 5200 worth what it is?

It doesn't look like he is trying to screw someone over.

The "he" is actually a "she" (the seller's name is "Brenda")! How many grown men do you know who refer to their dad's as "Daddy"?

My favorite line of the ad: "I prefer cash and can meet you at your bank (if needed).". Uhhh...No?

I would email the seller for better quality pics, especially of the headstock.

I messaged her to drop by the thread and we could help her with the guitar. Provided the CL posting isnt a scam.

Re: Craigslist - Daddy's Guitar

The 60s les paul in the picture got the tailpiece on the same spot like Daddies Guitar!!!
So is it or is it not?
What about the case?
Does it tell something about the year?

The tailpiece in the photo above is WAY higher than the one in the CL ad. That is the correct position. Take another look and make a note of it-it will help you out in the future! The stop tail piece should always be forward the bridge volume knob, never behind it like the one in the ad, unless it's a Norlin LP.
