I have just bought these wonderfully accurate PAF's and rings from a collector friend of mine. I cannot disclose who made these, but can say they are 100% totally accurate in every way. (See detailed photos)
The detail is phenomenal, and the aging is unsurpassed. On the rings - Moulding marks, and indents are all correct, as is the material used to make them. (see next lot of photos). There's even some marbling effect where the material was originally mixed! And... even the residual solder is there, looking like the covers were once taken off! Gobsmacked... ? I am. Chuffed to bits too. Paid a fair price for these, but a LOT lot less than a real pair. I know similar sets of these pickups have been sold on by unscrupulous dealers as the real thing too. All in all, the perfect pair of pick-ups for my repro LP which is being built. I have been told they sound like the real deal too, but I'll have to wait until the guitar's finished until I install them. It's gonna be a long old wait. They're just too good to put on my Historic!

Re: The Ultimate PAF repro?
There's only one man who can make those like that and include the rings.
I know who it is and I suspect he would prefer to remain anonymous. Just one thing, can you tell us when you've fitted them if you think they sound like you'd expect PAFs to sound. If so, can you then tell us how the competition compares. |

Re: The Ultimate PAF repro?
because, if those are the english rings guys were paying big bucks for a couple years ago they turn yellow just like the old japanese stuff when exposed to UV. The Vintage clone stuff is actually closer. As far as the PAF's, the most obvious tell, even from bad pics is the lack of machine marks on the mounting tabs. There are lots of killer PAF repros.

Re: The Ultimate PAF repro?
Here's a set of English rings and an Angel parts Japanese pickguard. The other ring is an original '50's ring. the latest Vintage Clone stuff holds it's color like the '50's parts. This guitar had been sun fading for a couple days here in Florida.

Re: The Ultimate PAF repro?
I suppose they would look OK on a mega aged guitar, but not on a newer guitar.
Haven't seen any old m69's that yellowed, except on a couple beat to shit goldtops.

Re: The Ultimate PAF repro?
People do some strange things, and then often expect to return them on warranty. The two that come to mind are a guy that left a guitar I finished on the back shelf of his car to try to fade it (even though it was the colour he asked for) and the binding melted off, all the plastic turned an amber colour, and the finish blistered off in large blisters. Another guy tried to return a guitar to Gibson after trying to age it in the oven! I agree though that there are lots of great PAF clones out there, although not as many as there are vintage guitar experts!

Jeez, I only chose to show these pics because I thought people might be interested. Believe me I know my PAFs. I have a total of x10 PAFs sitting on a few of my other guitars. I know what a PAF looks like and sounds like. These babies are bang on accurate. They're not real, but they sure pass as real. Thanks for your light relief as quoted above Sgt.Pepper!

Re: The Ultimate PAF repro?
really nice repro job. Impressive. The proof is in the tone, tho. Do you think they saound like a real Les Paul PAF? When I saw Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top play last year, his 59 really sounded like a Les Paul...
