re: Framptons '54 Custom found

I agree, if it were "no" it would be quick and painless. But if I were Peter Frampton and someone came to me with that guitar (or any 50's les paul) I would be wanting to acquire it anyway even if it wasn't the same one I lost years ago.

I agree that maybe it's the one and it's going to get restored before it goes public as a story on Gibson's website.

Surely if they only met today no one expects them to say yes without going thru god knows how many checks to verify it's not a fake. Plus I imagine they'd be a lot of haggling over the price so no one would want to play their cards too early and appear desperate.

It'd be a kick in the butt if he was surprised with having to sign some sort of agreement preventing him from discussing any further details or profiting from the story in some way... (if it is PF's). Am I being too cynical?

re: Framptons '54 Custom found

Just imagine how many people could benefit from this guitar if it's the one.

Benwave & friend: holding a historically valuable guitar, worth a lot of money.
Peter Frampton: getting his old guitar back, getting a new signature guitar from Gibson
Gibson: increasing publicity for the brand, creating and selling a new version of the guitar, restoring the original (and documenting this for publicity)
Record company: using the story for publicity, announcing a new tour?

All this stuff will take time to set up, and unfortunately there may be a lot of downplaying from Gibson/PF about the real value, so they can purchase the guitar at a sane price. And although it will be a valuable guitar, we should be realistic... PF is not Jimi Hendrix. Remember how long that Hendrix/Zappa mongrel strat was up for sale?

I dunno, I think maybe the delay could give the marketing types tie some sort of promotion and marketing campaign together.

Ben had mentioned that Peter would get the guitar for what they paid for it. He said they would be able to make some money on the guitar if it wasn't his.

That said, I'm sure they'll do OK.

Do we see a limited edition of the Peter Frampton "crash-reliced" Gibson Les Paul Custom coming up here? Of course numbered and all signed by the great man himself. #1 will be Peter's. #3 and 4 will go to the Dutchies... O yeah, and a non signed guitar for a little less.

My gut feeling is PF would want to restore it and not have it remind him of the accident and the resulting deaths.

Personally, I wasn't expecting an answer right away. I don't think it's realistic. I agree with mdubya that most likely they want to have time to thoroughly check it out before they make a determination.

If it is his #1, it would have been nice if this had surfaced before he started the 35th anniversary of the FCA tour, so he could have gotten it restored (if he wanted to?) and used it.

re: Framptons '54 Custom found

I personally think they're taking the next month to disassemble, measure, document, DNA test and generally gang rape this guitar, before total restoration, which BTW, I think is completely retarded.

WTF, if the thing is playable, which it probably is, why would you restore it? That thing has a story to tell, and the magic goes away when you refin it. Put on parts that it absolutely has to have, age the new parts and rock out with your cock out. Pretty simple.

Don't forget the History or Discovery Channel possibilities in all this. They could make a 1 hour episode about this guitar, and they could create a "Vintage Guitar Lost and Found" show out of it hosted by Frampton. They have created shows out of a whole lot less than this.

Great marketing opportinity for Gibson. "Our guitars are built so well, they can survive fiery plane crashes."

re: Framptons '54 Custom found

That guitar, according to photos, seems to have been restored/refinished at least twice (maybe three times).

It was routed for three humbuckers, neck shaved, and refinished before he got it. He described as "like new" when it was given to him. Later it shows up shiny with new gold hardware, then again with new fretboard and new hardware again.

I'd guess he liked it shiny and clean. Looked great on TV and on stage. He couldn't very well sling a dirty old Les Paul while wearing all that "I'm In You" era satin, now could he?

Man, those inlays are the real deal. You can't fake that.

Wilko has a very valid point. That period, all satin, frizzy perms and platform soles, required snazzy gear, not "road worn". Bang on, Wilko! As usual!

True, to some extent. But, that one album set the standard for 'Live' albums, and started the Live double album craze. It also contains multiple songs thare still in constant rotation on tons of radio stations across the US thirty five years later.

'Tis better to be a "one album rockstar", than a "one hit wonder".

This guitar is one of THE most famous guitars in rock history, more so even than the Beano burst, considering that it was supposed to have been destroyed in a plane crash.
