Yeah, really nice guitar. That mahogany had a nice bark/growl to it!

Re: `61 L.P. Custom-Single Cutaway

Must have been a special order guitar? Maybe ordered in late 1960 & built in 1961? This is only the second 1961 LP single cut away I have seen. The other was a Standard.

Re: `61 L.P. Custom-Single Cutaway

It's the first `61 I've seen or touched. To me they were only rumours I'd heard over the last 4 decades.

Re: `61 L.P. Custom-Single Cutaway

that's awesome, thanks for sharing it.

I'm always a tad confused by how many Customs were made in '61. Did they run the whole year, or just a few months? Or just rollovers from '60?
I've never heard of a '61 Standard before re: JimmyAce2006's post above.

Re: `61 L.P. Custom-Single Cutaway

dwagar...I posted a pic of a '61 three pickup custom awhile back in this Forum,as well as a pic of a '61 Burst...a couple of members figured I was FOS.

Walter Carter in one of his articles talks about the '61's a bit.Tried to find the article, but have been unable to.The article WAS on Gibson's website until they updated it a few years ago with their current format.I'm trying to find it as a few serial numbers were listed and was hoping this '61 Custom was one of them.

That looks like the pic I saw but I can not be sure. I had been googling, looking for a 1960s Les Paul and came across a remote store who had a pic on their site of one they had sold before. It also had a pic of the back of the head with the serial that started with a 1. There were not many of them.

Re: `61 L.P. Custom-Single Cutaway

...Bassman...I erroneously thought it was a Showman...I was oogling the R4,the 339 and the '61 too much and didn't pay attention to the amps...TM1's choice in gear is top shelf for sure.

Not to be a pooper of the party, I would need to see the routing. The serial font is definately the font size of factory refins, so it 'could', notice, 'could', be a 54- 57, refinned and modded for PAFs in 1961, although they usually put the original serial # on, in the font that was used in 1961. Any cavity pics?

Re: `61 L.P. Custom-Single Cutaway

...certainly anything is possible.the guitar was on loan from the owner to TM1 to play live.I think it would have been very rude to rip that guitar apart in the dressing room.
I know that if I lend my '60 out for a gig and find out it was being dissected,I would be severely pissed and offended.I felt it was a great thrill to see old wood in the right hands, being played live and to get the opprtunity to noodle on it myself afterwards.
