Question about the Split-Diamond Inlay

What year was the first use of it on a burst?

Thanks,
Ken

Re: Question about the Split-Diamond Inlay

That inlay is only on customs isn't it?

Re: Question about the Split-Diamond Inlay

Sorry for the confusion, let me clarify. Did Gibson ever use the split-diamond headstock inlay on any LP with a bursted finish prior to 1960?

It appears Gibson has used that inlay as far back as 1939 on other style guitars, for example;

Reason I'm asking is I just acquired a Japanese LP shaped guitar that has a bursted finish and a similar headstock inlay. Supposedly it was manufactured sometime in the '50s but I thought that would be unlikely if the burst finish LPs were not made until later. (What would they be copying?) Until now I didn't realize that inlay was used on many different style Gibson guitars as was the bursted finish.

The guitar is a Guyatone and per my research they were making guitars in the '40s thru the '50s so I guess it's possible.

Moderator may move this to "My Other Guitars" This just seemed the logical place to post the original question.

Thanks,
Ken

Re: Question about the Split-Diamond Inlay

Japanese guitars sometimes have some weird quirks that make no sense at all in the overall scheme of what the guitar is supposed to replicate. Sometimes they put stuff on because it just looks cool, or Gibson used it on any guitar model sometime in their history.

I saw some pretty funky guitars when I lived in Japan.

The first time I ever saw a split diamond on a Gibson sunburst custom is on the early 70's models, I've never seen an original Pre-60 Sunburst Custom, but it is Gibson you are asking about so there may be one or two out there.

54 for customs. the only sunburst that would have hd it would be sunburst customs, so probably 68.

Re: Question about the Split-Diamond Inlay

Thanks for the data guys. I'll have the guitar in my hands in a couple days. Might be some date codes hidden on it somewhere.
