Re: 68 LP Custom

Alright, first off, i dont play it because i have other guitars as i already said. I dont play it becuase it means too much to me. It was my grandfathers, but he passed away and left it to my unlcle. my uncle then gave it to me. this guitar is priceless to me because my grandfather is the reason i am playing today.

I only set it on the couch for that berief second i took the pic. I have hardshells for everything that they stay in when im not playing them. i wouldnt leave a guitar just lying out to get all scratched up by my cat who will scratch up anything and everything.

Yes, i was rather arrogant, but im only 18, and grew up in a shitty neighborhood where everything got stolen from someone so this guitar means THAT much to me. This is the guitar that got me into it all. this is the only memory of my grandfather i have.

if you want to try to cut me down on not playing it or anything, be my guest, i dont care.

Re: 68 LP Custom

Got rid of the leather furniture years ago... hated falling asleep on it then having to peel myself off when I woke up. Reminded me too much of my grandmothers plastic slip covers... on everything!!!

I never babied my BB, and when I think about it I'm sure I have abused her at times, but, she has never let me down, not ever!

Now that I am older I've mellowed considerably and try to take care of things a little better. I still wouldn't change one minute of my crazy youth with my 69 BB strapped on smashing my drummers crash cymbal with her headstock during a tune, or even the fog machine that always left an oily film all over everything on the stage!

Mmmmmm oily filmmmmmmmm

I dont remember if thats how it went or not, but thats what i know. He has pics of him in the guitar store buying in 1968
OK. I'm sure we all see the confusion there. ^^^

Secondly, another (mildly) arrogant post.

Thirdly, I wasn't "cutting you down." I'm sure your Grandpa would want you to play it, rather than hole it away in a case somewhere. Playing a guitar doesn't damage it in any way.

Fourthly, the leather couch info was a heads up in your benefit - I'm sure you don't want to fuck the finish, which is what you were working on doing.

Lastly, you claim to have 4 Gibsons and 2 Fenders. Doesn't sound like the life of a poor 18 year old from the 'Hood to me.

I'm really not an asshole - but your arrogant and inconsistent posts lead me to make observations.

Again, its a beautiful guitar. Enjoy it.

I wish I still had my first Gibson - it was a mid 90's Studio and a hell of a nice guitar. I was pretty careful with that one. I have an old Ibanez that is beat to shit that I played from age 12-18 on a daily basis.

It's all good little bro!

We old heads get a little cranky when we see something so beautiful not being used, but I understand better now your special connection to your '68!

If your not gonna play her at least strip down and rub her all over you once in a while... the body oils are good for the wood!

Seriously, that is all the more reason to bond with it. Again, you won't hurt it at all by playing it. I'm sure it sounds as if not more amazing than my '69.

Re: 68 LP Custom

Picture wise, the HIM in there was my grandfather.

I have 4 gibsons now because i got a job.
I recieved the 68 when i was 15. Within that 3 years, i moved out of that neighborhood, got a job, earned some dough, and got some guitars. I never once said anything about me being poor. I just lived in a bad neighborhood.

I would play it more if i didnt have other gibsons to play in its place. My grandfather passed away when i was only 9 and this guitar really is the only memory of him that i have. I remember seeing him sitting in his gold colored chair and playing it. I remember it every detail of it, and i dont want to risk getting a big scratch in it or a big dent. It does sound VERY nice, but i just dont want to risk anything.
serriously though, i know that an old guitar is something beautiful and this one is the most beautiful (to me) because it has played such a significant role in my life thus far and it holds such a sentimental value to me.

Alright man - I see where you're coming from.

I apologize for my brashness.

You have one hell of a great guitar there - and its quite the piece of history. The first year that the Les Paul was reintroduced, with the one piece body and one piece neck w/ long tenon - and as you said earlier, they're very desirable. The only LP's that are more collectible were from the 50's and 1960.

How much does it weigh? Hemp's '69 is 9lbs, my '69 is 8lbs 14oz (ours both have 3 piece necks) - I'd imagine that yours is probably in the 8's?

If I were you, I wouldn't be able to resist sitting down in a padded chair in a sweat suit and no jewelry to have a low key and scratch free jam session with her every once in a while.

So which other Gibby's are you sporting? Anything else interesting?

Re: 68 LP Custom

yeah, i do take her out of the case at least 5 hours a week and just play like theres no tomorrow. and then back in the case it goes.

Nothing interesting, just a standard, custom, and an SG.

Thats all I meant by "play her"!!! I thought you had it locked away and not seeing the light of day other than for pictures.

Sounds like you have quite the mix of Gibsons.

Welcome to the forum, by the way - your '68 is one of the cooler pieces among the members here!

so you play guitar for over 20 hours today? lol....

im glad you have the guitar to remember you grandpa by, but memories and objects are to different things... you need to embrace the acutal memories and not attach yourself so much to objects, god forbid, but what if the house burned down? memories are forever if you keep them alive, objects however are not...
anyways... work on your tact bro, youll catch a lot less crap lol... a simple "hello my name is so in so, this is my vintage guitar, it was my grandpas and means the world to me." might have gone over a little better... either way welcome to the forum... its full of bull headed ass holes, but there all really nice once you get to know them
