Insuring your vintage (or non vintage) guitars

Does anyone here insure their guitars? Most smaller collections are insured with your regular home owners policy. But there is a limit. For my needs, I was going to go through this one agent in PA who is known for a lot of musical instrument insurance. They write it through Travelers. But when I checked with my own Travelers agent, they were able to give me a much lower rate. Just curious to see what sort of insurance other people use and whether it covers transporting the instrument (in case you sell it). My insurance is for personal use, not professional or for playing gigs. It does cover transporting the instruments if I should sell one. It makes it much cheaper than paying $300-500 to insure a 15K-25K instrument through the courier. Mine is also very inexpensive and covers theft, fire, etc., comprehensive. So if you have insurance on your collection, is it expensive and what what does it cover?

Re: Insuring your vintage (or non vintage) guitars

I have the same coverage you do Jimmy, just add riders onto my homeowners according to the value of the guitar. My rule of thumb is I use the MSRP and insure it for at least that much unless it's something thats irreplaceable then I may up the coverage amount.

If I put one in the shop for some work I will also insure it with the store. I usually do this for a flat amount of $6k in case something happens while they have the guitar. If for instance something did happen I would get their $6k plus what I have it insured for on my homeowners. It's just easier this way since I do not travel with my axes. I can't see myself selling any of them but if I did I would call my agent about adding something to the current coverage or dole out the money for the shipper to insure.

When you start talking about "specialty brokers" your gonna pay a premium for their attention. So unless your collection is worth a few million I wouldn't bother.
