since when did G used the weight relief holes

Hello all!

I am new to this forum and I couldnīt find any infos on the following:

1. When did Gibson start to drill these 9 weight relief holes into the body? Are the old traditional ones (pre 1960) done with this, too?

2. Did Gibson use hide glue for the LP before 1960?

Should be glad to learn more about this, as I am starting a 59-do-it-yourself project soon.

Thanks and best regards from Germany,
Martin

1. The pre 1960 are all solid bodies with no relief holes. Not sure when they started the weight relief holes.

2. Gibson did use hide glue for the old bursts.

Cool Re: since when did G used the weight relief holes

Hide glue [animal] was used by Gibson to set the frets & neck in the 1958 , 59 Les Pauls. Dont know about 1960. Weight relief holes are used by Gibson on guitars with heavy mahogony bodies that would not qualify for use on a Historic 58 or 59. Gibson says you there is no sonic difference but if thats the case, why premium select the lighest "pre routed" bodies for the Historics?Out of every 500-1000 pre routed mahogony bodies, very few [3-4] weigh 4 lbs or less to qualify for a Historic RI. These are considered the premium select bodies.
