Very cool... I can't believe he actually travels with that thing in the original Lifton case... I wouldn't trust that case at all!

That is just all sorts of awsome. Quick question though, I'm not accustomed to looking at vintage LPs but I'm noticing more and more that the tail piece on some appears to be slightly slanted. Am I seeing this correctly or have I been looking to closely at the screen again?

Billy looks great, the guitar looks awesome. Thank you for posting this, cool to see him after his heyday. Didn't care for the tone of the amp with the guitar though, sounded very tiinny to me. Billy is def a great player.

I wouldn't judge the tone based off my cheapie point and shoot kodak - I thought he sound pretty good - he was using a nice Reinhardt combo.

Prolly so

, was it that much of a difference from live. I usually can tell no matter what recorder is being used, you can kinda give and take with it.

yes that is one of the things that many people complain about with the reissues; they don't slant the tail; although the 2009+ models are a little closer, still not to the degree you see here. but even with the vintage guitars, they were not all the same with the tail piece slant. some seem more slanted than others.

Guys, the tail peice is slanted on my studio (built in 1996 as far as i know), i always thought they all were?

You're right and it's funny...today a Gibson Les Paul Standard comes with that crappy "incorrect" heavy talpiece....a Tokai Love Rock (MIJ) comes with a slanted alu tailpiece and is soo much cheaper and more correct...i'm always laughing when it's 'bout those little things on those incorrect Gibson guitars and everyone wants to tell you that this is THE deal...

Of course i'm not talking 'bout those lovely CS and Historics....

As I understand it, Billy has a place on Central Park West - all of a mile or so to the Iridium. I just love the fact that he uses it for what is was meant for.

That thing is amazing - maybe one of the cleanest 59s I have seen. And I agree - it's great to see it out getting played, rather than sitting in the case in someone's private collection. Just hope he doesn't leave it in a cab ala Yo-Yo Ma ;-)

It isn't right to say a new LP Standard is incorrect; that is how they make them now. They are not supposed to be like the 50s bursts. But the reissues - the CS Historics - those are the ones that you should compare because, being reissues, they are not as "correct" as the bursts they represent when it comes to the tailpiece placement; although, as stated above, the 2009+ models are closer. i have seen bursts with tails that were no more slanted than the ones on the 2009+ guitars.

maybe it isn't intonated very well? Or depending on the guage of the strings, truss rod tension, etc., that is how this particular guitar is intonated with those parameters. I have found that each gutiar's intonation is slightly different, even with the same model, same guage of strings, etc. I used to always set the saddles to be in the same place without checking the intonation at the 12th fret because it worked on a different guitar that way. Came to find out very quickly that the distance from the nut to the saddles for each string on the one guitar was perfect; but that same distance from the nut to the saddles on a different guitar did not work....so maybe in the case of this guitar, it actually is intonated prefectly with the saddles where they are. who knows?
