Re: (FREE PICKUPS!) ReWind Electric & NAMI Team Up to Fight Mental Illness
Quote:
I'm wrapping up the MLPAF, which is based on specs unknowingly chosen by MLP members answering simple numerical questions and having no idea it involved a pickup, much less a giveaway. (John Cage would be proud) I've just sent out and received back excellent reviews of a "True58" humbucker to geetarfreek82. A PAF with parts/specs chosen, not randomly, but based on probability for a 1958 PAF. Two days later, he tells me he's sending back a Low Output for a rewind/rebuild to "True58" specs - which are "whatever" within the range of probability for a humbucker built in 1958 by Gibson. This one, I will wind like Gibson too, setting my machine up to Gibson/Lessona specs and covering up the counter, running it at 1,000RPMs for "5 minutes or until the bobbins are full", then later noting the wind counts for Noah and my records. I had an inquiry for a "True59" but have not yet seen the order come through - however, I'm looking forward to that! I'm also about to start building a Motherbucker replica/update for geetarfreek82 . One of these - This one will be a little different though in that it will have individual wires to all three coils (stuffed into a single braided shield jacket) for a wild combination of tones, perhaps via a multi-position rotary switch. I've got the proper brass and will start cutting and bending the baseplate tomorrow! I'm making a Jimmy Page #2 set for a very good friend and associate of mine. I have much work do to on researching the pickups and, hopefully, the control cavity of #2, but this is going to be a much more realistic kit than the one offered on the Custom Shop Gibsons. I'll likely be using OTPG, or old CAB Vintage Clone rings and a MojoAxe pick guard, depending on client preference, and the "under the guard" push push switches. It'll probably be the only realistic Page kit out there, other than Gibson's own which comes only with the Custom Shop #2's and… well… Burstbuckers and pink plastic are nice but… Nah, this will be f'ing tits-perfect as much as I can get it. Unfortunately, I've talked to a few folks "in the know" and have met only dead ends, regarding cavity shots. I might do a community outreach asking for help on that shortly. I plan to talk in more detail about this to the client tomorrow, first. Beyond that, I've got something new I'm messing with called a "Cali-Mazoo" which joins two half-width AlNiCo bar magnets on either side of the keeper bar, under the screw coil of a humbucker, and magnetic pole pieces in the slug bobbin with a maple spacer on both sides of the slugs underneath. Ponder why I might do that for a bit and I'll confirm/deny shortly. ![]() I'm in talks with manufacturers about having custom screws made with my own supplied NOS steel wire, custom pots made, starting down the path of having dies made for injection molding T-Top and PAF bobbins, visiting a molding facility to learn the process and explore the plusses/minuses of learning and doing injection in-house VS contracted, and trying my damnedest to negotiate a deal that would get me into custom-sized actually American-made AlNiCO bar magnets for my pickups. I probably can't do all types yet, but am aiming for, at least, A2 and UOA5 (don't wince! I used to hate A5 too, gotta have the right stuff and charge it right). I'm picking up the idea, again, of rolling my own craft paper and select mineral oil PIO caps, but this time with a different "suspended graphite" type oil to allow the same values in a smaller size, and sealing them in glass or something better than epoxy like my last attempt which ended up in a big cap with loose specs that probably wouldn't last. If I can get them small enough, I may potentially offer them in my own look, as well as stuffed into the shell of actual drifted-way-out-of-spec .022/400 bumblebees. Other than those little projects, and my full time day job and commute, I'm really just kicking back and chillin' like a villain. You know just kinda taking it easy and thinking about where I want to go in life while I have a beer. …in the five minutes between working all day and sleeping for 5 hours, then repeating. Diligence. Diligence, determination, and excellence at any cost. That's what's up here my good friend! It's 1:06 AM here and I'm about to make a brief, but exciting announcement, then fire up the bandsaw and start cutting steel strips. Living in a commercial zoning, yet directly on the main drag downtown rules! I f'ing LOVE Frederick! …oh, I'm also launching strips of maple into space with my hack-job "thickness sander" made of a Harbor Freight belt-disk sander that I forced into submission. ![]() btw - I have the website winners to announce now! Sorry I took so long. I really have no excuse. I'm a worthless lazy bastard.

Wish I had a talent for electronics and could do what you do...it sounds fun! (other than the long hours) i'd love to experiment and try to replicate all kinds of classic tones. Alas...it ain't gonna happen. I'll just have tovleave it to the pros.

Re: (FREE PICKUPS!) ReWind Electric & NAMI Team Up to Fight Mental Illness
Ok - so TIME TO ANNOUNCE THE WINNERS!!!
(so I can get back to work )When I saw the first name of the two that were chosen randomly from my payment spreadsheet, using this site, I didn't recognize it. …then as I scrolled over to the comments field, I nearly teared up. I can't wait to tell him. You see - if you haven't seen this thread, you should: Teen Axe Dudes 2012 Christmas Raffle …and look for it annually! These guys get together and put on a raffle where companies and MLP members donate guitar-related gear (sometimes even guitars!) to be given away to broke teen musician members right here, who otherwise wouldn't likely be able to get their paws on it. …and let's face it - what teenage musician isn't broke, right? Most of us have been there. This year I made a contribution of an experimental higher-output set of pickups I co-designed and a couple of NOS PIO tone caps. Well, it was looking like there were more teens entered to hopefully win a prize than prizes donated this year, as things came to a close. One MLP member, 7gtop, insisted that I let him help pay for the cost of the donation. I declined. Then he contacted me privately and wanted to purchase a set of pickups, which I would then drop-ship to the member chosen from the raffle. I was just floored with his generosity! How could I say no? Well, he funded a custom set of ReWind Electric PAFs that ended up going to one of the Teen Axe Dudes group members here on the forum. I've had a great deal of respect for his selfless act ever since. So… when I realized it was his name which came up as the first website-purchase winner of the NAMI Frederick County promotion, a sense of completeness and silent-amazment flooded me. I couldn't be more happy than to announce that MLP member 7gtop is the 1st winner of the NAMI of Frederick County MD charity donation contest! ![]() Dean, (hope you don't mind me using your real name) you are a stand up and right-doing fellow and I was so happy to work with you previously on the Teen Axe Dudes giveaway. To have the honor to build you one of these JPPage Sets (of your choice) is truly rewarding to me. The purchase that qualified you to win, was for another person in need, whom you didn't even know. Amazing. I'm truly overwhelmed with amazement and joy right now. Fukya! Nice job. Get in touch with me.

Re: (FREE PICKUPS!) ReWind Electric & NAMI Team Up to Fight Mental Illness
I just woke up my girlfriend to make her read this. Back in December she thought it was so awesome that I was giving away some stuff to broke kids, and even more so that another member here wanted to fund another set of pickups to be given away.
She said "Congratulations Dean, that's so awesome!" …then kissed me, took my half drank beer and walked back into the bedroom. What a women!

Re: (FREE PICKUPS!) ReWind Electric & NAMI Team Up to Fight Mental Illness
I'm going to announce the 2nd winner of the NAMI of Frederick County MD charity donation contest tomorrow. I'm not sure if they are an MLP member, and am trying to figure it out. It wasn't necessary to be for that part of the giveaway, I just want to find their username, if possible. Thanks for your patience on that. Lots of excitement for tonight anyway.

I've got a few things in the works, debating which guitars might need a new set. Maybe a True59 set. Maybe a JPP set. Maybe a custom set with a JPP neck in the bridge (since I am in love with that pickup you sent me) and something else in the neck...VLO? Maybe I'll just ask you to do something awesome and see what I wind up with? All the stuff you mentioned you're working on... sounds epic. I look forward to reading more about'em!The new band I've started is going to cut a record this summer - and I intend to do much of it with ReWind pickups. Hell, if you made some telecaster pickups, ALL of it would be RW. [hint hint] Once we start booking gigs, I'll find a way to get to Frederick! Cheers to you dude; cheers to all the winners; cheers to a great cause; and cheers to a great - and continuing - thread!

Re: (FREE PICKUPS!) ReWind Electric & NAMI Team Up to Fight Mental Illness
Ok! I got ahold of winner #2 this evening.
He is a member here, actually. Not a requirement to win this part, but very cool nonetheless! So... I'm extremely proud to announce that MLP member "Thrashmetl", Kyle Johnson, is the second winner of the NAMI of Frederick County MD charity donation contest! ![]() He and I have been working on some custom VLO humbuckers for a Tele of his. He's been an absolute pleasure to work with and we've had some great conversations about music and gear and such while working things out on the pickups. Congratulations, Kyle! I look forward to building you some more pickups when you decide which set you want. Thanks for being a supporter of ReWind Electric and NAMI of Frederick County, MD!

I think we're going to be hearing/seeing some very cool demos in the next day or so.
I've been getting sample clips from one of the reviewing artists. I'm pretty impressed, of both the playing and tone.

based on how he sounds, this guitar is now called (in baby versions as i was raised to not swear in public)
the bitch (the boohatch) or the motherfu**er, which would be the muddafudda. can't decide which!
