Les paul junior 50's wiring question

Hello all:

firstly let me apologize if his question has been answered before or sou ds dumb, but i have searched to know avail on the forums and have had no luck finding an answer...or maybe i am too thick to understand. In any event here are my questions

I have a 2010 les paul junior and wanted to have it done with 50's wiring.
My question is it it simply a matter of my guitar guy rewiring the existing componenets a certain way or will i have to purchase a new cap?
I realize the volume should be 500 and the tone 250 but is there certain brands or types i need to get? And finally does it have to be a bumblebee cap or can it be any cap with the same value (022/ 400v)

again sorry if these are dumb questions just wanted to know if i have to order a new cap or anything like that .
Thanks for any replies

Cool Re: Les paul junior 50's wiring question

You can do it with all the parts you already have, but many like to switch the pots to CTS as they are the best sounding, and have the nicest taper(to me).The tone cap can be any value you want that sound best to your ears, The higher the cap value the more treble is cut off, For single coils the standard is 0.47uF, for P-90s im not sure. below is a diagram of 50's wiring just disreguard the other volume and switch. Good Luck!

Correction: The way ive got my SG wired Yellow is to switch, and Red is Hot from pickup. not sure of the difference.

Re: Les paul junior 50's wiring question

In a Junior you won't have a switch.

Use the above diagram and the yellow is your hot output and will connect to the center lug on your output jack.

Then run a ground wire from both of the pots to the outside connection on your output jack.

Of course assuming your Junior is already wired up, all you need to do to acheive 50's wiring is switch which lug the capacitor is connected to on the tone pot.

Modern has the cap connected to the center lug and the outside lug connected to ground. 50's has the capacitor connected to the outside lug and the ground from the center lug.

Re: Les paul junior 50's wiring question

I'd try just the wiring change first... then if you still want more, try a PIO cap, then if maybe you want your tone a little brighter try a 500k tone pot.

I build my Jr rigs with a CTS 500k volume pot, a 250k tone pot, a 0.022uF paper in oil K40Y-9 cap and a Switchcraft jack, wired together with vintage style braided wire.

Re: Les paul junior 50's wiring question

is a lemon drop cap like an orange drop but more sour/less sweet?

I'd go with a Paper in Oil cap... but that's me.

Why are you wanting to change the pots, is there a problem with them?

Something in particular you are looking to get out of new pots?

for brighter, I'd think 500k on both would be what you'd want.

Thanks for the advice , how would having the 500 tone impact the 50's wiring?

Re: Les paul junior 50's wiring question

the 50's wiring really only affects one thing, In my experience... and that's that you won't lose any brightness when you lower your volume on the guitar.

You will lose a little volume when you turn down the tone.... sometimes it's not as noticable depending on the quality of the pots. It's basically a trade off.

Re: Les paul junior 50's wiring question

When I built the 50's style wiring Harness for my own LP Jr. clone I used a 10% CTS500K (550K specs)with a custom taper for the volume pot and CTS250K No Load Tone pot and a .022 400v Bumble Bee cap that had drifted a little dark. I have a Sheptone P-90 installed in this guitar and this wiring worked out good with it.

The No Load Tone pot gives you all the raw P-90 Tone, and then when you roll off the Tone control the Bee really sweetens it up. The P-90 is wound fairly hot at around 8.7K so the 500K Volume pot helps gets the most gain and clarity out of it.

Udonitron and buddhuu like this.

Re: Les paul junior 50's wiring question

Wow thanks for all the tips guys! Im taking her in tommorrow to toss 500 cts volume pot and have the 50's wiringdone.... I might also change the cap depending on what my guy reccomends. I think im gonna change the tone also but probably the same value (500) just because i hear the cts ones are better than the stock. Im using super slinkys on her and she needs a truss adjustment as well.I will post results tommorrow night.

Re: Les paul junior 50's wiring question

The 500K tone pot on a P90...just doesn't sound like a P90 to me. The originals were 500k vol and 250K tone. It really has that mid-range grind with this setup.

I wired mine with 500k vol 250k tone and a Jensen PIO and installed a Fralin P90. Sounds amazing. Very much like this JR here which is what I was aiming for)

Re: Les paul junior 50's wiring question

Ok so i went with a cts 500 vol and cts 250 tone.had to use the existing cap as he had no bumblebees( so that is my nExt project trying to get one). And did the 50's wiring .... Totally happy with it and i noticed a brightness increase in the tone because of the 500 k volume pot as xpected... I love ths gutar and it is now my number 1

Glad it worked out good for you, and I think using the 250K for the Tone pot vs 500K was the right choice

the '50s wiring really brightens the guitar up as well. i'm going to have to try these different pot values. anyone know a reasonably priced P90? my Jr got molested (humbuggered?) in the early 80s and i want to put him back to original. am terrified of paying a ton of money for a p90 though, for some reason

Re: Les paul junior 50's wiring question

Soemthing i just notced: when i turn the volume down seems like the taper is uneven and when the knob is at "one". Its actually at "zero". Also theres seems to be a signifigant difference between "10" thru about "8" and then more of a very quck gradual taper to where the voulme dissapears completely at "1" and i had to turn the amp to r
Not complaining just making sure its normal .

Re: Les paul junior 50's wiring question

That could be partially due to the 50's wiring, but also the taper on your 500k pot. Is it an audio taper CTS and where did it come from? WD, Allparts, RS etc.??

OK, just curious because CTS Makes 500K pots for a lot of people and they are all a little different as far as tolerance and taper goes. That's why I was asking.
