3 pick up les paul wiring

I want to wire up a 3 pickup custom for 3 volumes/ 1 master tone. Does anyone have their guitar wired this way that could post a pic of their wiring. I know that the diagrams are in the wiring thread but they are confusing. In this style, is the middle pickup on all the time? I want to get it so I can use the middle pickup with the neck, by itself, and with the bridge. Any tips would be great and please post pics if you have some. Thanks.

Re: 3 pick up les paul wiring

I tried using the wiring diagram from the sticky thread above, but now I have no sound. I don't understand how the hot jack lead is supposed to work. In the diagram it looks like it runs through the middle volume and the master tone po before it goes to the jack. Also, the stock Gibson historic wiring, the middle p/up lead went to the switch with half the shield stripped off, then it grounded to another lead coming from the switch, which went back to the pot. The diagram shows two of the prongs bridged together(I think), and then that wire weaves through the middle volume and the master tone on its way to the jack. The middle pickup lead then goes directly from the pickup to the pot? I am not very good at reading these diagrams, so any help would be awesome. Here is pic of what I have now:

Re: 3 pick up les paul wiring

The pots are: top right is bridge volume, top left is the master tone, bot right is neck volume, bot left is the middle volume. Also, the wiring diagram also says that the middle p/up is "out of phase" with the bridge pickup. This is not true, and I was told by Gibson that this was not the case with the 50's guitars either. The thin strat like sound produced by the middle/bridge combo is due to their close proximity to each other. This was news to me. Thanks in advance.

Re: 3 pick up les paul wiring

Thanks for the response. I guess I don't understand if the second and fourth prongs from the top of the switch, are wired together or are there two different leads, one for the middle pickup and one for the jack. The line just runs together in the diagram. Thanks.

Re: 3 pick up les paul wiring

Here's another diagram, hope it shows things better.
What I was thinking of doing was run 2 hot wires from the input, one to the tone pot and the other to the switch. Then for the middle pickup run a wire from the hot lug of the switch to the volume pot.
Haven't tried it yet, waiting on the pickups. Just my way of interpreting things.

Re: 3 pick up les paul wiring

Why do these diagrams use the middle lug for the pickup lead when Gibson always uses the first lug?

Re: 3 pick up les paul wiring

Glad you got it going. At least I know now that it works. If things don't work when I do it, it'll be operator error.

Re: 3 pick up les paul wiring

On these wiring diagrams of the switch. The switch I have has 3 posts either side, not all 6 in a row. What colour wire from switch is used for what pickup? Switch has red, black, yellow on one side, and green, blue, white on the other. Having a hell of a time wiring the LP. Seems I always get middle pickup working but none of the others. Any help would be greatly appreciated..thx.

Re: 3 pick up les paul wiring

Here is how I wired my 3 humbucker epiphone les paul (switchcraft switch).

Would this 3 humbucker wiring work ?

There are some in-progress versions of the diagram on that thread, so be sure to use the final version (if you decide to go this way).

The wiring has 3 volumes, 1 master tone. It enables the following combinations: Neck, Middle, Bridge, Neck - Middle, Neck - Bridge, Middle - Bridge, Neck - Middle - Bridge, None (mutes the guitar). So you can combine the humbuckers any way you want.

In addition I have done (lately) a treble bleed mod (designed by Aki) for this. http://muusikoiden.net/dyn/articles/706.jpg

Re: 3 pick up les paul wiring

I believe the gibson three pickup sg custom is wired in just this way, none of the three pickup les paul customs are but someone may know different.
