Orange Drop Caps, anyone use them?
Hey guys, I have been getting ready to re-wire my '07 LP Standard and I have been looking at some caps. It seems that PIO caps are very popular and I have heard some good things about Orange Drops. Has anyone compared them or have some feedback from their use/experience?
Thanks, Read

Re: Orange Drop Caps, anyone use them?
I've used orange drops in my guitars before, but I've never done an A/B test between them and PIO caps.
PIO are all I have in my guitars now. Orange drops are a significant upgrade from chicklet or ceramic caps, but PIO are even better. There's warmth and responsiveness you get from PIO that can't really be found elsewhere.

Re: Orange Drop Caps, anyone use them?
I had orange drops, but went with Russian PIO's from eBay. I think they do sound better. Some would say there's no difference, but to me, it sounds like there is.

Re: Orange Drop Caps, anyone use them?
I've used Orange Drops in my Strats with good success. They are not junk, but not really on par with PIO's as others have said.

Re: Orange Drop Caps, anyone use them?
I use whatever caps my customers want, and stock Orange Drops and Mallory 150's. I think orange drops are a definate step up from those little buggars that come in stock guitars, or the brownish disc caps you get form stew mac or radio shak, but i prefer the 150's
Are they better or worse than russian PIO's... Honestly, I don't know... I use mallory 150's in my personal guitars because they are of good quality, and are axial in design, which makes wiring them between the volume and tone caps a snap. The orange drops are just as good, just different to wire and a bit bulkier. However... 80% of the time my guitar is plugged in, I'm using so much distortion that I'm on the verge of ripping space and time apart, therefore, the brand of cap makes no difference whatsoever. The only time I've really noticed the caps influence is when playing though a tube amp clean or with overdrive distortion. Then, I still lean towards the mallorys, but, agree that once you put an Orange Drop, Mallory or PIO in, you'll never be happy with the stock caps again! |
