Opinions On Inexpensive PAFs...

Well, the economy has finally caught up to me. I've been wanting to try pickup swaps in my R7 and my 335 and I'm having a REAL tough time moving on the high dollar PAF style pickups. I'd love a set of Throbaks, Holmes, Skatterbranes, etc. But I've spent more time lately looking at the likes of Jon Moore, Mick Manlius, Duncans, etc. I'm really considering a set of Moore Manalishis, the price looks right. The stuff Manlius is turing out looks great also. Has anyone compared either of these manufactures? How do they stack up against the more popular or expensive PAF replicas?

Re: Opinions On Inexpensive PAFs...

I'd also consider a BG Bucker. Nice sounding pickups, and very pleasant guy to work with. I don't have experience with the others you mentioned, but they have a good buzz online.

What do you have in there now, and what do you not like? I pulled the '57 Classics from my R9 and replaced them with Timbuckers and have been pleased, but some swear by the Classics (including some who have owned real PAFs) - to me they sounded kind of sterile. I also have Burstbuckers in another guitar and felt that they were too strident until I demagnetized them some - now I like them.

Re: Opinions On Inexpensive PAFs...

I haven't had any experience with Moore or Manilus, etc. so to be fair, I can't comment on them, but they all have good buzz online.
I know member kevinT here runs that $125 special on his guitarforce pickups. I haven't tried them myself, but have heard nothing but good things. Might be worth checking into!
Otherwise, If it were me, I would be patient and wait for a set to pop up used in the classifieds or ebay. I've found used is really the way to go if you can be somewhat flexible on the specs. I've seen some great deals in the past few months on Skatter's, WB, WCR, etc. If you can sell the set you have now, it would offset some of your costs.
Best of luck! Will be interesting to see if anyone has had a chance to compare some of the ones you've mentioned!
