Question Blues guitarists to listen to, to get in to playing blues seriously ???

Well been playing a few years now n not been very solid (if you know what I mean!? lol) I know a little bit of everything.

I'm doing grades soon to fill in the gaps I missed in my learning for the past few years.

The main thing is though I like blues alot I dont listen to many artists/guitarists that play mainly blues.

So could anybody suggest some good artists/guitarists to listen to and that would "influence" my playing style ??? (if you will lol )

Thanks

I don't think you can beat BB King to learn from.

Try some John Lee Hooker too.

Add to that Buddy Guy, Peter Green, Freddy King, and a list as long as my arm but that ought to get you started.

SRV, BluesBreakers with Clatpon, Howlin' Wolf, BB King, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Moore, Buddy Guy, Albert King, a lot of Hendrix, Paul Butterfield, OLD ZZ top (like early 70's)...that's a few to get you started.

Re: Blues guitarists to listen to, to get in to playing blues seriously ???

Stevie Ray Vaughan we´re able to incorparate from alot of "legendary" blues guitar players such as Muddy Water, T-Bone Walker, BB King, Freddie King and alot of others.
You also have Buddy Guy.
Elmore James is also a personal favourite

Greg Koch makes instructional videos for Hal Leonard company and he´s a great teacher.
I´ve got to Stevie Ray Vaughan dvds with him and they didn´t have any tablature but he show so great that you don´t kneed tablature

MUDDY WATERS. Period.

Then you can listen to other blues greats, like Albert King (I learned a lot from him and his music), BB King, Rory, SRV, Hendrix.... But you need to get in touch with the roots of the stuff so you can get a feel of where it all comes from.

A few other artists I love listening to, T-Bone Walker and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Howling Wolf and of course, Buddy Guy! Lots of great music out there, nothing you can compare to today's re-fried stuff.

Lots of stuff nowadays you can listen, great artists, great inspirations. But you need to go back to basics, to see what this is all about. Then you can gather all your influences and cook your own soup, I guess that's your objective.

Listen to Crossroads by Robert Johnson, you'll see. Compare that to what Eric Clapton does and his version, you'll get a polaroid of the evolution of the blues.

Instead of deleting I'll put more input...anyway. Freddie King, Howlin' Wolf, Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, SRV, Willie Dixon.
If you use iTunes, they have a few blues iTunes Essential collections that give you a wide variety of people to listen to....who knew the White Stripes played a blues style song
whether you agree that this is blues or not, it definitely has strong blues roots

Re: Blues guitarists to listen to, to get in to playing blues seriously ???

I mean no disrespect to any of the other members who posted, nor do I mean any disrespect to any of the Artists that anyone has posted, but my guy, the guy I listen to the most, the guy who brings a smile to my face the most, is Albert Collins.

No pick, no overdrive boxes, no stacks, no whammy bars, no Tube Screamers™, no cowboy hats...

Sing what you play, play what you sing...if you can't sing it, don't play it. Period.

When you watch him play, he is one of the most expressive blues players ever. Sure, there are faster, notes-per-measure, louder guys that are all impressive and shit, but if you want the pure, basic building blocks to start out with, Albert Collins is your man. Far from perfect, but perfect.

Then, I'd suggest (as others have) B.B. King & Albert King.

In fact, if you think you can play, try singing...3 or 4 feet away from the microphone...like this:

IMHO, when it conerns Blues, simpler is better. K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid).
