Tone Problem

I have a problem with my neck pickup, which has prevented me from really using it, and this is very constricting. The problem being that the pickup sounds WAY too thick, and i can not seem to put my finger on the problem. I have tried moving the pickup to different positions, but it has not solved the problem. Everything is okay with my bridge pickup which leads me to believe that it is the type of pickup, or has something to do with the wiring. The type of pickup I'm using is: SH-2n Jazz Model (i have the Seymour Duncan hot rodded set). So that is that, any ideas?

Re: Tone Problem

What guitar, and do your volume and tone pots work with that pickup selected?

Re: Tone Problem

An RS Modern Upgrade kit will remove any muddyness from your Neck pickup....it has to do with the pot & cap allowing the treble frequencies being sent to your amp. Gibson's stock pots & caps aren't very good at letting treble frequencies through, thus a muddy, lifeless tone.

That's what i figured, i've been slowly upgrading the components on my guitar because well... the stock parts are scary. You are a godsend my friend, thank you!!!

Re: Tone Problem

i have a vm with an RS modern kit, and just put in the jazz/jb set in it and its not muddy at all... it is actually very clear and smooth.. but it is kinda deep and boomy sometimes depending on how i have things set as far as volume, tone, amp settings and how i am playing... i would suggest starting with a pot and cap upgrade whether it be RS(which i love) or other... just my 2 cents...

by the way... hillbilly rocks, as well as RS... they always give you that personal touch... plus they from my home state...

Re: Tone Problem

Have you tried adjusting the height of the pickup?
