I'm guessing there should be some kind of wire running between the switch lugs as well, like in the schematic there, but I don't know where to solder it.
Ok, try this wiring diagram I think you should be good to go bro. Switch has 8 lugs in a row just like yours, end lugs are not used, other 6 are paired up, 3 way, master vol. master tone 2 pu's

Re: Wiring Library

Thanks! But that's exactly the way I did it twice now without it working. The EMG pickup wires have a braided ground sleeve that I've soldered to the volume pot, then the inner wire goes to the switches just like in that schematic. I really don't know then what I'm doing wrong, active pickups should at the very least not have ground hum, so there has to be something wrong somewhere.

You are trying to combine two diagrams that use two different switch types, EMG's have two pu leads just like other pu's the battery is connected separately. If you are using that switch it has to be wired like Squire diagrams shows. So your wiring problem is not in switch but how you have the pu's wired to volume and tone.
I would either get another switch like shown in the EMG diagram or follow the Squire diagram and add the battery lead in like shown for EMG's.
Not sure what else to tell you bro, maybe some one else will chime in with some advice. I never liked those import switches myself.

Re: Wiring Library

Hi there people. This is an awesome thread.

I'm planning to rewire my Les Paul BFG to 50's wiring, change the caps to PIO caps and using cloth wire. Have anyone ever tried this before? What will the BFG sounds like?

Keep this thread alive, this is absolutely helpful.

Thanks

Re: Wiring Library

My advice to anyone who is not familiar with guitar wiring, Take it to a shop!
Even the magnificent wiring library has its shortcomings. Avoid a meltdown and take my advice.

Re: Wiring Library

Dear Maestromind DO NOT USE CLOTH WIRING. My mistake is your gain, use braided only!

Re: Wiring Library

Hey Jonesy,

What is that SD diagram that you post often considered? Is it modern? My Chinese Epi is wired that way currently. I was thrown back to see the caps tied back to the housing when I opened her up.

If you mean this diagram, Yes it is modern style. Watch out on the epi's as they use a different grounding path from switch and out put jack that needs to be re-done for everything to work correctly. A lot of times people will just use part of a wining diagram and they will have problems.

Yeah, I noticed that too. In the cavity the switch wire has 4 leads inside 3 of which I can trace back to the switch. I haven't seen (because I haven't looked close enough yet) where the fourth (ground) wire terminates. On the cavity side of the harness, this ground wire goes directly to the switch. I wonder if it's other end marries to the bridge ground or one of the PUPs further up the channel somewhere.....

I'll figure it out.

As always, thanks Jonesy. I'm still thinking about those caps too.

Re: Wiring Library

Nevermind. I can see clearly that the switch is grounded with the four conductor wire and that the cavity is grounded to it at the harness clip. Man, what a mess. IMHO of course!

Left Handed 50's Wiring if you used LH pots

As I flipped the RH image on my computer I noticed that the connections are in the wrong places for RH pots which is what Gibson uses. This diagram would only be correct if you were using true LH counter rotating pots.

Re: Wiring Library

NOTE: FYI Left handed wiring is a flipped/mirrored version of the Right hand wiring. Gibson has always use RH pots in most all of their guitars even the Left handed ones. A RH pots volume will increase when rotated clockwise and lugs will NOT be wired the same on RH vs LH pots.

Fender on the other hand has used LH Pots in most of their LH guitars, not so much nowadays though but in the past. LH volume increases when rotated counter-clock wise and lugs are reversed accordingly compared to RH pots. Some guys that play Tele's are used to the counter rotation so when I build LH rig for them I use the CTS Left handed pots.

peace, jonesy

Re: Wiring Library

Hi, I threw this schematic together and was hoping for someone to confirm that it's correct. It should be 50's wiring, with a phase reversal switch and a series/parallel switch.
