Help with pickup change decision

I have a dilema with something hoping you guys can give some assistance with. I have been playing alot of grunge, hard rock, some metal and I am really digging the sound of my 490/498 in my studio, however I love the look, feel and playability of my Traditional. I am thinking of swapping out the 490/498 and placing them in the Trad. Would this be wise for this type of music or can the classic 57's do the job as well. My amp is a B52 AT100 and I use a fulltone ocd to compliment the tube distortion. I know it's personal preference but I think I just need a new voice to gain advice from cause I just can't decide right now.
Or maybe combining one of the two together, one in the bridge and one in the neck?

Re: Help with pickup change decision

Why not keep the pickups you like the Studio and have two guitars you can use? You can get the same pickups pretty cheap on ebay or try some other hot pickups in the Traditional. You could get someone to rewind the 57s or just sell / trade them.

Yeah that's not a bad idea either. It's just that I play better with the Trad because of the Plek system the frets are closer to the fretboard. I am really not a multi guitar type person, I like molding myself to one main guitar pretty much. I mean I like the studio but the Trad is more comfortable for me to play on.

Re: Help with pickup change decision

Then you might as well just swap them and keep the Studio as an extra.

Yeah, I mean if I don't like the way the change sounds I can always change them back so it's really no loss.

If you like the 490/498 in the Studio, leave them in. In regard to the 57 Classics, I think these are nice pickups. I'm confused though. You obviously have the 57's but ask if they can do grunge, hard rock, metal

I presume you have tried and are not satisfied?

Yeah I have tried them with Maiden, Alice, Mastodon, Nirvana, and they do sound good but when I use the 490/498 they got more growl and bite to it. I have been comparing but i think it's starting to mold into the same sound. That's why i wanted some input from you guys.

Re: Help with pickup change decision

I run a '57 Classic\Classic Plus combo in my SG and I play AC/DC, SAXON, tons of Iron Maiden, Priest, Dio, Accept, etc. and it kills. I also use a Marshall so maybe your amp needs some adjustment to take advantage of the pups you're using.

Re: Help with pickup change decision

Minor pole piece adjustments can also change/improve the character of tone available from your Classic '57s.

If you are looking to get something for Alice Mastodon etc.... look for something with a value between 12k and 14k I have found that these are much more suited for doin the "grunge" thing.
