Re: allparts any good?

I'd be interested to see what it reads on a meter...

Re: allparts any good?

They may 'cut corners' by getting a better price on the pots by not having very high tolerances on their pots. For example, with a 30% tolerance, they'll sell you a "500K" pot that reads 350K...hey, it's 'within tolderance'...

You get what you pay for.

And you'll still have to enlarge the holes in your guitar if you bought a CTS pot from allparts. A few moments with an Exacto knife isn't exactly "routing"...

Re: allparts any good?

It's going to depend on how new the stock is. Older CTS pots were good but they have taken a nosedive in the last year. Tone should still be more "alive" with the CTS pots but the taper may or may not be very good and it's actual reading for a 500K pot could be anything from 350K to 600K

Re: allparts any good?

As a comparison, we (RS) meter & clean ALL of our pots, and those that don't meet or exceed the spec's don't get sold.

You get what you pay for.

Re: allparts any good?

I'm thinking of updating the pots in my 2000 Gibson Les Paul 1960 Classic and in my 1997 Strat Plus Deluxe.

I'm unclear about whether there are different types of pots to be used for the volume control and a different type to be used for the tone control. RS Guitarworks' site talks about a "super pot" (which apparently is made specially for them by CTS) for volume and a (regular?) audio pot for tone.

What if I am installing regular "non-super" pots for all controls? Then do I have to worry about volume vs. tone pots? Or is the same standard "audio pot" used for both tone and volume? Thanks.

What is it about the original pots you don't like?

Re: allparts any good?

Well, I still haven't decided 100% on the Les Paul, but I am installing new pickups in my Strat and I noticed that the 2nd tone control is like a "double stacked tone pot" (one under another) and I remembered that's the mid-boost feature. I don't want that and instead want to replace it with a standard pot.

So, I was just wondering if there's a special type of pot intended for the tone control versus the volume control.

In other words, should the EP 0085 250K CTS Audio Pot that I just bought be alright for the 2nd tone position?

Re: allparts any good?

It'll be fine for the tone pot.

The taper on Audio taper pots isn't very good, and the SuperPot is a huge improvement in adjustability.

You can use Audio taper pots all the way around, but the taper on the Volume controls won't be as responsive as the RS SuperPots in the Volumes.

250K audio for your Tone control in your Strat; 500K will make it sound a little brighter but still can be used.
