Marshall Haze 40

I just got my Marshall Haze 40 today at a bargain.

It's a nice sounding amp for anything from warm ballads to dirty and bearded distortion. ACDC, ZZ top, Lynyrd Skynyrd etc.

Since this amp is no heavy metal amp, I'm keeping my old Line 6 spider and just switch between them if I need to play heavier stuff.

I'm new to tube amps. Is there any way to tweak a tube amp to give it more bite and distortion? To take it more in the heavy metal direction.

Yeah, I know what you're all thinking. "Why didn't he just buy a tube amp designed for heavy metal?"

But the thing is: This amp almost made the hair on my arm stand up when playing solo or blues. And I can drive it harder with the ESP with the after-burner (or buy a booster pedal).

Congrats on the new amp!! I think you're the first one here with the haze. Just put an overdrive pedal in front of it. Oh and before I forget, PICS!!!!

Re: Marshall Haze 40

Here comes the pics. Nevermind my keys and my girlfriends camera. My amps also serves as bedroom tables.

I just love having new gear and read the manuals before I fall asleep at night. People read books... Hell, I read instruction manuals.

A voice in my head told me when I got the fat summer paycheck and the tax money back today: "Easy now, mister. We're only going in there to buy a new power supply for the pedals and put 80% of the money to the savings account."

I walked out of there with a tube amp. It just belonged in my bedroom and not some amp room in a guitar shop. I was GASing big time!

Sounds familiar to you guys?

Yep, it does sound familiar lol. Man, that's such a sweet rig! Did you get it local? I hope our local Marshall dealer gets some too.

Re: Marshall Haze 40

Yeah. But it was the only one they had. Some other guy was playing on the amp and was like: "I'll come back tomorrow with the cash".

I guess he's going to be disappointed tomorrow.

Can't you just ask them to order one for you? This is a good amp, dude.

I wish I had a studio and a mic for the amp to let ya'll know how she sings.

Re: Marshall Haze 40

Well, I probably could. But I don't know how high (price) it will get bumped to cover shipping, taxes and duties, and markup. BTW, you totally pulled a fast one out of the other guy. Sucks to be him tomorrow.

Re: Marshall Haze 40

If that were my amp, the first thing I'd do is make sure the power tubes are biased properly. Marshall has a 20 year history of shipping new amps that are overbiased.

As to your metal tone question, slam the input with a mid-scooped EQ pedal.

Re: Marshall Haze 40

I got the Mini-Stack a couple weeks ago. I'm loving it.

Been putting it through it's paces both mic'ing the cab (attenuated) and through a Palmer PDI-03.

Can't say much bad about it - I would wish for dedicated tone controls per channel and I would've gladly swapped the built-in FX for an FX loop but I *am* using the built-in Delay. The clean channel is maybe too dark to be a go-to clean but useable.

Here's my pedal board (fwiw):

One more shot of the head with my spec-freaking-tacular Axcess (running the head dry into the Palmer).

Sounds really really good and way more practical than a 100w halfstack by any measure I'd use. I'm not going to be a rockstar but I'm almost giddy firing up an all-tube Marshall "stack" jamming with my friends, recording etc. Puts a big smile on my face and that's what it's all about.

Re: Marshall Haze 40

A couple of months ago I was GASing for a low-wattage amp and ended up buying an Epiphone Valve Junior (no plans on modding it, I love its simplicity), but now I wish I had held out for the Marshall Haze.

Nine times out of ten I put my Digitech Valve Distortion infront of it for some dirt anyways. I guess that's what everybody goes through: Buy one piece of gear then something new and blows it out of the water. Ahh, the never ending pursuit for tone.

Re: Marshall Haze 40

the 15 watt looks nice with those special cabs, but I kinda find the mini-stacks look like toys next to the big ones, which is fair enough I guess, but I wanna run it through a 4x12, then we're talkin' ^^ just waiting for my money tree to grow, I planted the coins weeks ago and still nothin! >.<

Be very careful if you work on it yourself. Tube amps still unplugged carry alot of voltage. Enjoy nice amp. Keep us informed about any changes you make.

Re: Marshall Haze 40

I got a Marshall JCM2000 TSL602 for 700. All it needed was a good biasing and now I don't even need a tube screamer. I was diging those Haze amps though, cause I want a smaller tube amp.
