Re: How to Use the Controls on a Les Paul
"Ice pick through the ear" means there's so much teble it hurts. It is harsh.

Re: How to Use the Controls on a Les Paul
I used to put electrical tape in a "X" pattern in the center of my speaker to lessen the ice pick effect.

Re: How to Use the Controls on a Les Paul
To improve speaker directivity, which includes avoiding ice pick sound when directly in front of the speaker, consider the solution presented in this (long) thread:

Re: How to Use the Controls on a Les Paul
I use a baffle and it deals with the problem of 'beams' as well as performing a number of other useful functions. I highly recommend it.

Re: How to Use the Controls on a Les Paul
Yes, it should work. If it doesn't work as well as you want, then examine your wiring, pots and components. After that you can worry about your pickups.

20 years of playing (admittedly nothing pro) and I just tried this...
There is a palm print on my forehead. *Selfheadslap*![]() And now I look at it, it's one of the most obvious things you could do... Thanks Splattle, that's why I love these forums. |

Re: How to Use the Controls on a Les Paul
Well sorry buddy. I don't know there were a bunch of you "Splatty's" running around! hahahaha. Hey you should check out Joe Bonamassa. He is another great example of a 4 knob player. He has some of the best tone out there. People compare it to the dumble amps but he has taken it further and made it his own. He uses no push pulls or any extra knobs; just his 2 tone controls and 2 volumes. youtube some of his stuff at Rockaplast. Sometimes he only plays with his volume knobs like an old Jeff Beck thing.

Re: How to Use the Controls on a Les Paul
Great post, and yeah, I was surprised to see four pages go past before Beck got a mention. Working out to his CDs taught me a lot about working volumes. This will help even further.
Thanks! |

Re: How to Use the Controls on a Les Paul
I've only very recently started using the controls on my guitars and actually not all of them have controls. My number one has to pups a 5 way switch and....that's it !
So when I read your post I followed your tip with my MIK LP copy and my Superbass Stack and I really loved it ! I now need to learn how to use the tone as I had never touched it but those volume tricks are great. I'm definetely gonna spend more time on the Les Paul and the 335 now, thanks to you. MERCI !

How about explaining a couple of my BC Rich's? Ha!

Re: How to Use the Controls on a Les Paul
Having spent a few weeks following the advice in this thread, I gotta say it's helpful. I play with settings all the time, but the stuff in here will certainly come in handy. Thanks.

Re: How to Use the Controls on a Les Paul
being that i only use single channel amps (Orange OD and JCM800), i use my toggle on the LP as a "channel switcher".
since i'm more of a metal influenced player, my amps are set to ROAR! my bridge pickup is usually on 10 and i use that for all of my heavy rhythm work. i'll keep my neck volume very low and use that as a clean channel and then the middle position is for semi-clean/dirty tones. i do prefer soloing on the neck pickup so i'll roll up the volume when needed. i'm so addicted to this behavior, that i can really only play LPs of Tele Deluxes with the same wiring. i learned this from from watching Karma to Burn back in the mid-90's at dive bars during college. |

Re: How to Use the Controls on a Les Paul
With the stock wiring in my LP classic, this worked well. With jonesy's 50's kit, it's amazing. No mud, just classic LP tones. Thanks for this post.
