Caps in series with signal.
Caps in series with signal. NOT used like a tone control to bleed treble to ground.
I was just playing around with different Cap values the other day and a soldering iron. The first thing that was nice is that disconnecting my stock caps instantly gave me closer to the sound I was looking for (a little brighter), so I’m going to try some 1 meg Pots (torres engineering has some) with lower value caps. Once I had things disconnected and had the alligator clips out I started playing around with trying to create a high pass filter (to see if that would give me more brightness as well). This didn’t exactly work how I thought it would, but what I found was that putting a Hovland .022mF MusiCap in series with the signal sounded damn good. It didn’t knock out the lows like I thought it would, but instead created a bit of a subtle dip (somewhere around 400 to 800 HZ I think) which sounds very sweet. The guitar sounds essentially the same but more clear. Especially when chording. I have never seen this suggested anywhere, so maybe it’s just stupid, but I swear it sounds very nice. Any thoughts? Downsides i'm not thinking of? |

Re: Caps in series with signal.
great.. for tone issue i always say whatever works, works and thats it
ive experimnted using all kinds or reisistors and caps wired all kinds or ways you really cant hurt anything b/c of the extremly minimal voltages so go for it. now if you were working inside an amp i say otherwise

Re: Caps in series with signal.
That idea has been used :
http://www.glguitars.com/schematics/...ockdiagram.pdf It is the pot marked as "bass". It is not completely the same as passing signal through just a cap, but the difference is IMO inaudible. |

Re: Caps in series with signal.
Cool. Thats originally the type of thing I was shooting for, but it had little effect with the regular .022 cap I had on hand, so I just tried the cap on it's own. I guess if I want to try a high pass filter that gives me a better cap value to use.
