Wink I Love My Crybaby Wah, Do You?

Been using these things for years and I really Love them. Just got a vintage 70's Crybaby from Slowhand and it has awesome sweep and Tone. Just wondering what you guys think of them, some folks don't seem to like them. I tried a Morley a time or two and could not get used to the way the pedal rocked back and forth? Here is a list I found from Wiki-Pedia...

Artists who have used the Cry Baby

* David Gilmour of Pink Floyd has used the Classic Cry-Baby Wah-Wah Pedal on many songs on several albums, most notably "Stay" on the album Obscured by Clouds.
* Stevie Ray Vaughan used a Crybaby wah-wah pedal on some of his songs, though he may have also used a Vox wah as well, given his heavy use of elements that contributed to Jimi Hendrix's tone.
* Mick Ronson (David Bowie's guitarist during the classic early 70's era) is said to have achieved his distinctive sound by playing a Gibson Les Paul through a Crybaby - the only effects pedal he used much of the time during this period.
* Dimebag Darrell used a Cry Baby 535Q in many of his solos, as well as the Custom Shop DCR-1SR rack wah.
* Kirk Hammett uses the Cry Baby in many of his guitar solos. He is quoted as saying "The only way for you to stop me from using it is to cut off my legs". He is known to use the Custom Shop rack wahs, as well as the Crybaby Classic.
* Jimi Hendrix is widely considered to have been a master of the wah pedal, and was one of its earliest users. He was believed to have used the Crybaby, but he more often used a Vox wah, on such recordings as "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", in which he used the Vox Clyde McCoy model. Frank Zappa introduced Hendrix to the wah.
* Jimmy Page Guitarist of Led Zeppelin, usually uses a Classic, modified for increased treble, which can be heard on tracks such as "Dazed and Confused" and "Trampled Under Foot".
* Steve Howe of Yes uses one on the live version of "Yours Is No Disgrace" on the album Yessongs.
* Brian May of Queen uses a wah pedal on "Mustapha" as well as "White Queen (as it began)."
* Slash uses the wah-wah pedal among other special effects. He has been associated with the Crybaby Classic, and in 2006, his signature Crybaby was introduced. He has also been seen using a Real McCoy Custom RMC3
* Tom Morello is noted for his extensive use of effects pedals including the wah pedal; He has said that the Crybaby that he uses on stage was manufactured sometime during the 1980s.it can be heard on 'Bulls On Parade' from the album 'Evil Empire'. His Crybaby is possibly unique in that its sweep remains within the mid-ranges, as he has said that he has multiple Crybabies, and none of the others sound like the one that he uses.
* John Petrucci of Dream Theater uses a Dunlop Cry Baby Custom Shop Rack Wah, as well as a 535Q at clinics.
* Joe Satriani uses a Dunlop 535Q CryBaby in many of his recordings, as well as many other wahs.
* Zakk Wylde uses a Dunlop Signature Model wah pedal, and previously used various other Crybaby wahs.
* Joe Perry uses a Cry Baby GCB-95 in many Aerosmith songs.
* The Edge of U2 uses one on live versions of Bullet the Blue Sky and The Fly.
* Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers used a 105Q Bass CryBaby.
* John Frusciante of Red Hot Chili Peppers uses various Dunlop Crybaby models, along with the Ibanez WH-10 wah, with which he is often associated - He has been attributed to the Dimebag Darrell Crybaby From Hell model, which he used on the Stadium Arcadium album. can be heard on songs 'She's Only 18', 'Hey' and the solo on 'Dani California'.
* Steve Vai used a Dunlop Crybaby in "The Audience is Listening" and in many of his other songs. He used a modified Crybaby as his main wah, until his Morley endorsement. He now uses the Bad Horsie 1 and a modified Crybaby 95Q on stage.

Ron Wood in Paris 2003 Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)

Here is the one I am using now, I have used the hendrix model, vox pedals and 4-5 other Crybabys and I can always can get that Jimi and SRV vibe so easy out of them, I guess thats why I like them so much.

Re: I Love My Crybaby Wah, Do You?

The Dunlop Crybaby is the greatest pedal ever created!

I am one of the "pedal-less" kind of guys with the exception of the footswitch to change channels, but as far as an additional effect....

This one is awesome. One of my faves...but a close second would be a Morley volume pedal.....

I'm thinking about getting one. What about the toneloss that I hear all about. Havn't tried it yet. Choosing between the Vox and the original Crybaby, anythoughts about this?

It is jonesy, it's definitly the classic rock sound and I voted that way. However, I purchased and returned one last year and got a Fulltone Clyde Standard instead. I just like the sweep and mids of the Fulltone a little better. But Crybaby's still rock.

I'll tell you what, Beerdog80 here at MLPf is like the "Wha-master" as far as wah knowledge, mods and repairs go. I have another Crybaby on the way that is missing the Tone Pot and I am going to hit Beerdog of for some parts and repair knowledge. Maybe send him a PM and pick his brain a little?

Re: I Love My Crybaby Wah, Do You?

I have a RMC picture wah best wah pedal I have ever had. I tryed the cyrbabies but they didnt have a very nice sweep to my ears. The picture wah has a foxrox retrofit in it so it works with fuzz and distortion and it is true bypass. Hand made by Geoffrey Teese its beautifully crafted. I will never go back to anything else. My old wah was a vox v847 modified with true bypass but i couldnt stand the oscillation with the fuzz and the lack of sweep. The Picture wah is modeled after a vintage vox clyde mccoy wah that has clyde's picture on it hence the picture wah has geoffrey teese's pic on it lol. I play classic rock and blues and I can get that cream clapton wah sound from the live albums and tales and white room also can get a pretty good jimi sound with it Check them out they are a nice alternative and a step up from the crybabies. I love mine.
I cant believe I just said hence haha. Heres the link to the wah site

Re: I Love My Crybaby Wah, Do You?

The only 2 pedals I own and both are dunlop. I used to have a standard cybaby but it went "missing" so I ended up getting this one with a bonus from work. What I like about the 95q model is the auto switching and the fact that is starts from the back of the sweep. I don't bother with the volume boost facility but I do like the sweep adjust.

The other pedal is a rotovibe which is amazing especially as i got it real cheap on ebay.

The other wah that I liked the sound of was a vox.

I think I'm gonna get the GCB95 Standard and make the switch mod so I don't get any tone loss.

REAL MCCOY CUSTOM
I'm a big fan of the RMC Picture Wah. I prefer it over any Dunlop I've owned or tried.

Re: I Love My Crybaby Wah, Do You?

Picked up a non working Cry Baby on eBay & have an Area 51 Board & POT coming to do a little wire/modding myself.

Had a Slash Cry Baby & hated it. Sold it after a week.

Looking forward to this one though. There is just something about using/playing something that you've had a hand in making & or adjusting, tweaking to your wants & needs.

Morley man myself, I prefer the switchless design. step on it and start wah ing, and its on. Take your foot off and its bypassed. Nothing to really go wrong.

For those who are obsessed with 'true bypass' neither have it stock. The Vox (to my ears) is more problematic than the Dunlop.

The Crybaby handles fuzz/distorsion pedals a bit better than the vox because it has a buffer built in. For the Vox, you can add a buffer to the circuit real easy.

Since you can find both rather cheap, pick them both up and test them in your rig. And sell me the one you don't want.

The 95Q is more or less the same as the regular crybaby but with an adjustable 'Q' (how intense the vocal quality of the wah is) and volume boost built in via adjustable knobs on the side.

You can make a normal Crybaby the same way using external pots or internally mounted trimpots.

what I like about it is this is a switch less design. Meaning, as soon as you put your foot on it, the Wah engages. Take the foot off and its off.

I went through the Crybaby Classic, Vox 847a and one other I can't remember. Then I watched the Robin Trower Live DVD "Living Out of Time" and was floored by the tone he was getting from his Fulltone Clyde Deluxe. I couldn't afford the Deluxe so I got the Standard instead and have been happy as a clam ever since.
