Re: PICKS! What does everybody use?

Dunlop Nylon Standard 1.0mm Black.

If it was thicker, it would be too bulky to me and I'd lose accuracy. If it was thinner, I wouldn't like elasticity of it.

If it was too small, like a Jazz III, my finger joints would be too close to the strings. Too tall and I would lose precision.

"Ahhh, this porridge is just right!", said the guitarist in glee

Re: PICKS! What does everybody use?

I started with celluloid Heavy's, but I chewed 'em too much. ("351" shape.) Then I saw that J. Hetfield used Tortex greens (.88mm) & that was it for me for a long time.

After a several-month sabbatical, I found Celluloid Medium's worked better for me. EB's seemed to last the longest.

Now I'm on a quest for grip. I used so score lines with a razor, but I broke too many while playing. Tortex .73's & Ultex .60's will last, but I lose the grip. I hold the Snarling dogs .73's better than Dunlop nylons. I also like the Planet Waves Medium (blue) celluloid with the rubber logo in the middle, but they're kinda pricey. I have a Cool .8 tortex (delrin) with a rubber grip that I like, but I can't seem to find 'em anywhere.

Re: PICKS! What does everybody use?

I have a couple sets of Dunlop Ultex and Clayton Ultem on their way from MF in both normal and jazz/spike shapes. All sets are about ~.7mm.

I've never used either before as I'm a fan of nylon or Fender thin celluloid, but want something with more attack that doesn't get warm and fuzzy the way a thick/heavy celluloid or nylon does. Really looking forward to trying them at practice to see if they give me that edge I'm looking for.

Anybody make a similar switch from thin nylon/celluloid to medium Ultex/Ultem?

Re: PICKS! What does everybody use?

Dunlop Ultex Jazz III's, though I've been really interested in Red Bear pics. Guthrie Govan and a lot of guys I know are raving about them, but there's no way I can justify $20 on a freakin pick.

The Ultex/Ultem picks are solid, durable picks. Based on my experience with the Dunlop's. It has less play than a nylon, especially a thin one. More "snap".

I think the .70? would be a big transition for you, too "Heavy" of a pic, but I guess you'll see. I'd recommend something around .50 . They're also the color of mucus, that may or may not bug you.

I have a couple of Clayton Acetal picks, and they're just a bit bigger than the usual Fender 351 shape & believe it or not, I can't use 'em. The best way to try new picks is to go to local stores & see what they have. Go through the baskets & li'l drawers & buy 1 or 2 of each one that you think might work for you.

Re: PICKS! What does everybody use?

I've used Dunlop Jazz III's like forever.. recently just switched to Ibanez Paul Gilbert signature picks. Threw away my Dunlops after that. The PG Ibanez's are thinner, slightly bigger and wider but pointed like the dunlops. For some reason I played so much better with the Ibanez's!

Re: PICKS! What does everybody use?

Just got my Ultex and Ultem picks in last night. I only had time to do a quick A/B on my acoustic last night, but the differences were audible.

What I got: Clayton Ultem Gold Sharp Standard .72, Dunlop Jazz III Ultex, Dunlop Ultex Sharp .73

What I compared: Fender Thin Celluloid, Snarling Dog Brain Pick .53, Fender Heavy Tortoise jazz shaped

In each case, the Ultex and Ultem picks were louder and clearer with sharper attack and higher treble response. There was no noticeable "boost" to mid or bass response. The Jazz III Ultex picks, in particular, were louder and the differences vs the Fender & Snarling Dog picks were more pronounced. I did not have time to pick a favorite among the various Ultem/Ultex picks, so I'll give them all a try at band practice tonight.

For anyone interested in Ultem or Ultex picks I can say they do exactly what I was hoping for: they provide sharper attack, greater volume, and better high frequency response. For someone like me who plays lead and needs to cut through a band mix, these are certainly an improvement over the everyday picks you find at most music stores. I had to order these through MF as nobody around here stocks them.

Dunlop Tortex .73 for the better part of the last 20 years. Fender Mediums for 'twang' and Bluechip picks for 'unplugged' pick'n.

Re: PICKS! What does everybody use?

Dunlop 1.5's. I used to use 2.00 but after a while it felt quite heavy, and it would really 'pull' on the strings. 1.5's still feel just as nice, and they don't chip as much as my other picks.

Re: PICKS! What does everybody use?

Don't see anything wrong with this many pages on picks. I for one like it as I may see guys using something I never thought about before (ex....V-PICKS). I think it's pretty cool to see what others have chosen to use. It's obviously an interesting thread to most or else there wouldn't be seven pages! LOL

BTW- I've been using the large rounded Fender heavy triangle (White, same as Kerry King of Slayer) for 10 years. Always had trouble holding regular or small picks like JazzIIIs.

Re: PICKS! What does everybody use?

I'll try nearly any pick I can get my hands on, but I keep coming back to celluloid Mediums. I'm also liking the .60 Ultex on the 10-52's. I wish they could make them another color besides "Mucus".

Re: PICKS! What does everybody use?

Think I've mentioned V-Picks and Red Bear Picks in this thread. But I just bought a Wegen pick (Trimus 350), and it's fantastic! Use it mainly for acoustic, but it works great for fat rhythm. For more general electric use, I'll have to try out a more pointy pick.

Re: PICKS! What does everybody use?

I think pick choice is a very personal matter, depending on style, guitar played, amp and effect settings, and other factors. Generally, I use Fender medium celluloid picks -- but I mod them by shortening the point and rounding it slightly, and drilling several holes in the grip surface to help my keep my grip with sweaty fingers. With these, I can strike the strings with the full side of the pick and achieve a nice pop or twang. Or I can angle them slightly and go mellow. I pick out the confetti color when I can find it, because they are colorful and easy to spot when I lose one. (I lose more pick than I break. Actually haven't broken a pick in 50 years.)

When I want "shred speed" I can use a rounded triangular "K Pick" which is made of plexiglass and is pretty thick and tapered at the striking points. They just glide over the strings, BUT make a slight clicking sound when they strike. So while they are useful to me, the use is limited.

I never thought of drilling them, I score them with a razor about four times on each side for grip, but they'll sometimes split when I really dig in hard. What size bit do you use?
